The IBCs' patent-pending innovations — complete thermal isolation, the ability to test large cells and batteries, and the features needed to test high energetic batteries safely — provide a level of accuracy and functionality not seen in other calorimeters. Precisely measuring heat generation helps optimize battery thermal-management systems to extend battery life and improve safety at an affordable cost. With forecasts of more than half a million hybrid and electric cars this year – and with manufacturers needing to meet increased fuel efficiency requirements – the IBCs allow auto manufacturers to address safety and efficiency issues long before drivers have to rely on the battery packs to get them home safely.

Honors will go to NREL in the category of Foundational Technology for developing the Large-Volume Battery Calorimeter (LVBC) that can detect heat loss and determine efficiency in the large batteries being used to power electric vehicles. NREL’s LVBC is a crucial tool for automakers and battery companies, the only isothermal calorimeter capable of measuring the thermal efficiency of batteries for today’s and future generations of advanced vehicles. NREL’s calorimeter was recently used to identify the source of a potential 17% gain in battery power, which could ultimately deliver a dramatic improvement in vehicle performance.

Fail-Safe Designs For Large Capacity Battery Systems

US Patent:
2013011, May 9, 2013
Filed:
Sep 27, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/628208
Inventors:
Gi-Heon KIM - Superior CO, US
Kandler SMITH - Golden CO, US
John IRELAND - Denver CO, US
Ahmad A. PESARAN - Boulder CO, US
Jeremy Neubauer - Denver CO, US
Assignee:
ALLIANCE FOR SUSTAINABLE ENERGY, LLC - Golden CO
International Classification:
G01R 31/36
US Classification:
324434
Abstract:
Fail-safe systems and design methodologies for large capacity battery systems are disclosed. The disclosed systems and methodologies serve to locate a faulty cell in a large capacity battery, such as a cell having an internal short circuit, determine whether the fault is evolving, and electrically isolate the faulty cell from the rest of the battery, preventing further electrical energy from feeding into the fault.
