Abstract:
The present invention relates generally to the field of laryngeal mask airway devices. The invention provides for dual passageways in a laryngeal mask which permits a physician to effectively isolate the trachea from the esophagus. In one embodiment, the physician separately inserts an instrumentality (e.g., an endotracheal tube) into a patient's esophagus in order to isolate the stomach from the lungs, respectively. In another embodiment, the physician inserts an instrumentality (e.g., an endotracheal tube) into the trachea and inserts another instrumentality (e.g., a drainage tube) in the second passageway within the laryngeal mask in order to remove particles or fluids contained in the laryngeal mask that may cause problems if allowed to flow through the patient's trachea to the lungs.
