Angle Indicator For Capsular Bag Size Measurement

US Patent:
7993398, Aug 9, 2011
Filed:
Apr 24, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/739392
Inventors:
Jim Deacon - Goleta CA, US
Edward Geraghty - Rancho Santa Margarita CA, US
Edward Zaleski - Santa Ana CA, US
Assignee:
Abbott Medical Optics Inc. - Santa Ana CA
International Classification:
A61F 2/14, A61B 5/103, A61B 5/117
US Classification:
623 512, 623 41, 623 511, 600587
Abstract:
Implantation of an accommodating intraocular lens in an eye may require the accurate measurement of the size, circumference, or diameter of the capsular bag of the eye. After the natural crystalline lens has been surgically removed, a flexible ring may be temporarily or permanently inserted into the capsular bag for measuring the circumference of the capsular bag. The ring is generally compressible to fit through a surgical incision, then expands to fill the capsular bag along an equatorial region. The ring has a central component that changes shape as the ring is compressed. The shape change is generally correlated to the size of the capsular bag and may be measured visually or with a camera through the cornea, the measurement being generally independent of corneal magnification.

Filed:
Sep 21, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/534199
Inventors:
Jim Deacon - Goleta CA, US
Rakhi Jain - Irvine CA, US
Leander Zickler - Menlo Park CA, US
Assignee:
Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. - Santa Ana CA
International Classification:
A61F 2/16
US Classification:
623 616, 623 617
Abstract:
An intraocular lens for providing vision to a subject contains an optic, a support structure coupled to the optic. The intraocular lens also includes a textured surface and/or subsurface layer. The optic is disposed about an optical axis and comprises an anterior surface and an opposing posterior surface, the surfaces being configured to focus light when implanted within an eye having a capsular bag. The textured surface is disposed over a surface portion of the intraocular lens and includes a plurality of periodically-spaced protrusions, each protrusion having a smooth distal face and a sharp corner edge configured to engage a wall of the capsular bag and/or at least one cell disposed along the wall. The subsurface layer is configured to scatter an amount of light that is at least twice the amount of light scattered by portions of the material adjacent the subsurface layer or at least twice the amount of light scattered by another intraocular lens that does not have the subsurface layer, but which is otherwise substantially equivalent.

Systems And Methods For Ocular Measurements

US Patent:
8002827, Aug 23, 2011
Filed:
Mar 26, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/412338
Inventors:
Jim Deacon - Goleta CA, US
Edward Garaghty - Rancho Santa Margarita CA, US
Assignee:
Abbott Medical Optics Inc. - Santa Ana CA
International Classification:
A61F 2/14, A61B 5/103, A61B 5/117
US Classification:
623 512, 623 41, 623 511, 600587
Abstract:
A system for measuring the size of a capsular bag of an eye of a subject includes a size indicator and a sizing gauge. The size indicator is configured for insertion into a capsular bag and includes a peripheral portion and a pair of arms. The peripheral portion is configured to engage the capsular bag. Each of the arms has a proximal end and a distal end, the arms being joined to one another at the proximal ends. The peripheral portion is joined to the distal ends of the arms. The arms form an angle that depends on a size of the capsular bag into which the size indicator is placed. The sizing gauge has a body having a front surface, along with first and second features disposed along or behind the front surface. The features are configured to correspond to an angle that is within a predetermined range of angles of the arms of the size indicator when the size indicator is placed within a capsular bag.

Intraocular Lens For Inhibiting Cell Growth And Reducing Glare

US Patent:
2007010, May 10, 2007
Filed:
Oct 24, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/552429
Inventors:
Marlene Paul - Laguna Niguel CA, US
Daniel Brady - San Juan Capistrano CA, US
Jim Deacon - Goleta CA, US
Assignee:
Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. - Santa Ana CA
International Classification:
A61F 2/16
US Classification:
623006160, 623006170
Abstract:
An intraocular lens implantable in an eye includes an optic for placement in the capsular bag of the eye and for directing light toward the retina of the eye. The optic has a central optical axis, an anterior face, an opposing posterior face and a peripheral edge between the faces. The peripheral edge has one or more curved or angled surfaces that reduce glare within the IOL. For instance, a rounded transition surface on the anterior side of the peripheral edge diffuses the intensity of reflected light, or a particular arrangement of straight edge surfaces refracts the light so as not to reflect, or does not reflect at all. The intersection of the peripheral edge and at least one of the anterior face and the posterior face, preferable both of such faces, forms a peripheral corner located at a discontinuity between the peripheral edge and the intersecting face or faces. The present IOLs inhibit cell growth from the eye in front of or in back of the optic and reduce glare obtained in the eye in which the IOL is located.

Lens Protector For Intraocular Lens Inserter

US Patent:
6267768, Jul 31, 2001
Filed:
Mar 22, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/273367
Inventors:
Jim Deacon - Goleta CA
Thomas M. McNicholas - Laguna Niguel CA
Assignee:
Allergan - Irvine CA
International Classification:
A61F 900
US Classification:

The injector rod has a distal portion adapted to contact the intraocular lens within the hollow passage of the tube to urge the intraocular lens distally through the hollow passage. The force transfer assembly is adapted to transfer sufficient force to the injector rod to effect the longitudinal movement of the injector rod and is further adapted to prevent the transfer of sufficient force to the injector rod to effect the longitudinal movement of the injector rod in response to an increased amount of force being applied to the force transfer assembly.
