Extravascular Circulation Of Oxygenated Synthetic Nutrients To Treat Tissue Hypoxic And Ischemic Disorders

Extravascular Circulation Of Oxygenated Synthetic Nutrients To Treat Tissue Hypoxic And Ischemic Disorders

US Patent:
4445514, May 1, 1984
Filed:
Jun 18, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/275117
Inventors:
Jewell L. Osterholm - Radnor PA
Assignee:
Thomas Jefferson University - Philadelphia PA
International Classification:
A61K 3100, A61M 514
US Classification:
128632
Abstract:
A novel system and method for treating ischemic neurologic tissue is disclosed wherein an oxygenated nutrient emulsion is circulated through at least a portion of the cerebospinal pathway. The nutrient emulsion contains an oxygenatable non-aqueous component, an aqueous nutrient component, an emulsification component, and other components which render physiologic acceptability of the nutrient emulsion. Methods for producing the nutrient emulsion and a system for delivering that emulsion to the cerebrospinal pathway are also disclosed. Additionally, novel diagnostic methods for diagnosing the physiologic state of hypoxic-ischemic and other diseased neurologic tissue during treatment are provided.

Oxygenated Perfluorinated Perfusion Of The Ocular Globe To Treat Ischemic Retinopathy

Oxygenated Perfluorinated Perfusion Of The Ocular Globe To Treat Ischemic Retinopathy

US Patent:
4795423, Jan 3, 1989
Filed:
Aug 28, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/901640
Inventors:
Jewell L. Osterholm - Radnor PA
Assignee:
Thomas Jefferson University - Philadelphia PA
International Classification:
A61M 3700
US Classification:
604 24
Abstract:
A novel method of treating ischemic retinopathy is disclosed. After diagnosis of ischemic retinopathy, as for example as a result of retinal infarction, the ocular globe is penetrated with two small cannulae. An inflow and outflow perfusion is then established with an oxygenated perfluorochemical emulsion or other physiologically compatible oxygenated liquid. A sufficient perfusion rate is established and maintained to provide the metabolic needs of the retina for the 3 to 5 day period necessary to permit the natural healing process to occur. The method comprises removing at least a portion of vitreous body to create an intraocular perfusion space and establishing a perfusion of physiologically compatible oxygenated fluid through that perfusion space at a rate and for a duration sufficient to permit the natural healing process to occur. Alternatively, a method of diagnosing the condition of retinal tissue suspected of being ischemic is disclosed.

Filed:
Aug 24, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/238982
Inventors:
Jewell L. Osterholm - Radnor PA
Assignee:
Thomas Jefferson University - Philadelphia PA
International Classification:
A61M 2502, A61M 500, A61M 100, A61B 1900
US Classification:
604174
Abstract:
A cerebral catheterization apparatus for delivering oxygenated nutrient to or from the cerebro-spinal fluid pathway of a patient suspected of suffering from ischemic central nervous system tissue is disclosed. The apparatus comprises catheter means for providing a delivery pathway for an oxygenated nutrient to the lateral ventricle of the brain, which delivery pathway comprises an inlet and outlet; guide means, mating with the catheter means, for directing the catheter means toward the lateral ventricle; and a harness, on which the guide means is mounted, which is positionable with respect to the patient's head such that the catheter means may be reliably inserted into the lateral ventricle.

US Patent:
4608635, Aug 26, 1986
Filed:
May 23, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/737239
Inventors:
Jewell L. Osterholm - Radnor PA
Assignee:
Thomas Jefferson University - Philadelphia PA
International Classification:
G06F 1542
US Classification:

Intra-Peritoneal Perfusion Of Oxygenated Fluorocarbon

US Patent:
4657532, Apr 14, 1987
Filed:
Jul 19, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/757015
Inventors:
Jewell L. Osterholm - Radnor PA
Assignee:
Thomas Jefferson University - Philadelphia PA
International Classification:
A61M 3700
US Classification:
604 24
Abstract:
A novel method of oxygenating the tissue of a living mammal is disclosed comprising the steps of providing an oxygenated fluorocarbon-containing liquid; injecting that oxygenated liquid into the peritoneal cavity of said mammal; and withdrawing said fluorocarbon liquid from said cavity, said injecting and withdrawing be conducted at a rate sufficient to oxygenate said tissue. Accordingly, a novel "artificial lung" is disclosed which is useful to selectively oxygenate the body of a mammal, as reflected by increased arterial blood gas (pO. sub. 2) in said mammal.
