Magnetostrictive Mass Sensing Apparatus And Method

US Patent:
6465749, Oct 15, 2002
Filed:
Jul 7, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/612046
Inventors:
Jerome Leigh Kurz - Carmel Valley CA
Assignee:
Los Robles Advertising, Inc. - Monterey CA
International Classification:
G01G 316
US Classification:
177210FP, 73580
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for weighing particulates in a gas stream has a generally cylindrical tube manufactured from a magnetostrictive material. One end of the tube is anchored to a mounting block, while the other end includes a filter. The gas stream passes through a filter, where particulates are collected. Several alternative filters provide various alternative benefits for varying applications to different sensing applications. Between the two ends of the magnetostrictive tube are electromagnetic drive and pick-up coils which are magnetically coupled to the tube. The drive coils are driven by an electrical current from an electronic control circuit to generate alternating magnetic fields. These alternating fields in turn stimulate ultrasonic oscillations in the magnetostrictive tube, causing the tube to extend and retract along the length. Oscillation is in the longitudinal direction only, resulting in only one mode of operation.

Thermal Anemometer Flow Meter For The Measurement Of Wet Gas Flow

US Patent:
8549908, Oct 8, 2013
Filed:
Jun 17, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/817211
Inventors:
Ralph A. Dalla Betta - Saratoga CA, US
Daniel R. Kurz - Salinas CA, US
Bruce B. Burton - Royal Oaks CA, US
Ricardo Martinez - Santa Cruz CA, US
Jerome L. Kurz - Carmel Valley CA, US
Assignee:
Los Robles Advertising, Inc. - Monterey CA
International Classification:
G01F 13/00, G01P 5/00
US Classification:
732025, 7317012
Abstract:
A flow body flow meter includes a flow body and a sensor having one or more probes in the flow body. As a wet gas stream enters the flow body, an internal passage imparts angular momentum to the stream to induce a rotating flow. The wet gas stream at least intermittently carries liquid phase particles and the inertia of the denser liquid phase particles separates them from the rotating flow. The probes of the sensor are located in a part of the rotating flow that is free of any liquid phase particles. The internal passage may include an axial swirler and a cylindrical section downstream from the axial swirler. The axial swirler imparts the nonlinear motion to the stream, and tips of the probes are located near a center axis of the cylindrical section so they are free of any liquid phase particles.

Apparatus For High-Volume Sampling Of Gases At Constant Mass Flow Rate

US Patent:
4067705, Jan 10, 1978
Filed:
Oct 11, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/514197
Inventors:
Jerome Leigh Kurz - Carmel Valley CA
International Classification:
B01D 4600
US Classification:
55210
Abstract:
A device for high-volume sampling of gases comprising a filter, means for holding the filter, and means for drawing the gas through the filter and the means for holding the filter wherein a mass flow rate sensing probe is placed in the gas flow path between the filter and the means for drawing the gas through the filter in a location such that the velocity profile of the gas across the area of gas flow where the probe is located is substantially flat and substantially invariant with respect to temperature and pressure changes in the gas, the probe being connected to means for converting a signal from the probe into the changes in the rate at which the means for drawing the gas through said filter operates so that a substantially constant mass flow rate of gas flows through the device.

Fluid Flow Meter Body With High Immunity To Inlet/Outlet Flow Disturbances

US Patent:
7509880, Mar 31, 2009
Filed:
Mar 4, 2005
Appl. No.:
10/590160
Inventors:
Jerome L. Kurz - Carmel Valley CA, US
Assignee:
Los Robles Advertising, Inc. - Monterey CA
International Classification:
G01P 5/06
US Classification:
7386185
Abstract:
Method and device are provided for accurately measuring fluid flow in a conduit. A fluid flow meter conditioning body, in-line with the conduit, conditions the fluid flow so as to provide a flattened and invariant fluid velocity profile. The device provides high immunity to upstream and downstream non-uniform fluid velocity profiles. Fluid diffusers adapt the device to different conduit sizes, eliminate field welding and conduit fittings. In a preferred embodiment thermal convection mass flow sensors and circuitry are used to further improve the accuracy of the measurement of the fluid flow.

Mass Velocity And Area Weighted Averaging Fluid Compositions Sampler And Mass Flow Meter

US Patent:
7752929, Jul 13, 2010
Filed:
Jun 21, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/993085
Inventors:
Jerome L. Kurz - Carmel Valley CA, US
Assignee:
Los Robles Advertising, Inc. - Monterey CA
International Classification:
G01N 1/00
US Classification:
73863
Abstract:
A sampling device and method for use with a conduit for fluid which has at least one sampling nozzle or sample hole. The sample collected is directed to a manifold where an analysis is conducted and flow rates are measured. The sampled fluid is returned to the conduit. The Static Pressure Control System uses a vacuum pump or other device to equalize the static pressures of the sample nozzle collection manifold and the Static Pressure of the Conduit to achieve the mass-velocity and area-weighted average fluid composition and mass flow rate.

Isokinetic Extractive Sampling Probe

US Patent:
4566342, Jan 28, 1986
Filed:
May 5, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/491881
Inventors:
Jerome L. Kurz - Carmel Valley CA
International Classification:
G01N 120
US Classification:
7386303
Abstract:
A flow-rate proportional (isokinetic) sampling probe provided with two identical axial-flow thermal flow sensors whose outputs are used in a differential manner together with a sampling nozzle flow controller to extract a flow-rate proportioned sample of fluid passing thereby, wherein one flow sensor is used to sense the velocity of the fluid and the second flow sensor is used to sense the velocity of the fluid captured by the sampling nozzle, the area of which is the same as that for the flowing fluid such that the differences between the flow sensor outputs is directly used to control the sample flow rate and maintain an isokinetic condition under a wide range of fluid conditions. Two identical temperature sensors used respectively for the flow sensors to automatically adjust the operating temperature of the thermal sensors as the ambient temperature changes.
