Abstract:
The invention provides, in some aspects, aviation navigational systems and methods for cockpit display of traffic information that generate intuitive three-dimensional graphical representations of air traffic (and/or other potential conflicts) in the vicinity of an aircraft in flight, as well as during take-off and landing. These systems and methods provide improved awareness of potential conflicts, offering in the cockpit an immediate understanding of the significance of potential conflicts, e. g. , vis-à-vis their nature, direction, and time to visual contact. Thus, according to one aspect of the invention, there is provided an aviation navigational system that generates a 3D representation of the airspace in the vicinity of an aircraft and, relative to that representation, a representation of air traffic in that airspace. In related aspects of the invention, the 3D representation of the airspace is relative to the aircraft position in that airspace, the representation of the air traffic in that airspace is relative to a viewer on that aircraft.

Abstract:
The invention provides, in one aspect, aviation navigational and/or flight management systems and methods that accommodate emergencies requiring provide real-time, built-in guidance to a nearest reachable airport. Related aspects of the invention provide such systems as respond to an operator alert, e. g. , pressing of a button, by provide a graphical representation of the flight path to a nearest reachable airport. Further related aspects of the invention provide such systems as take geography into account in (i) identifying a nearest reachable airport, and (ii) determining a path to that airport. Still further related aspects of the invention provide such system as take characteristics of the host aircraft, weather and other externalities into account (i) identifying a nearest reachable airport, and (ii) determining a path to that airport. Other aspects of the invention provide systems as described above that, additionally, accommodate real-time radar vectoring operations and/or course deviation information from a predetermined flight plan between an origin location and a desired final destination.

Abstract:
The present application provides systems and methods for providing navigational guidance during off-course operations, and techniques to revert back to a desired flight destination upon completion of such operations. In one aspect, an aviation navigational and/or flight management system is configured to alter guidance instructions from a predetermined flight plan for a desired destination to a particular set of radar vectors resulting in off-course flight operations. In another aspect, the system is configured to recalculate a flight plan to the desired final destination upon completion of the off-course operations without resulting in the loss of current historical flight data.

Abstract:
The invention provides, in some aspects, flight management systems and methods that generate three-dimensional (3D) graphical representations of airspace in a vicinity of an aircraft (e. g. , in flight or during take-off). Such systems can include a display and a processor that drives the display to generate a two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) depiction of flight path. In a first mode, the processor drives the display to generate a flexible highway-in-the-sky (HITS) fight path having an endpoint that is fixed to a destination and having an origin that moves relative to a current location of the aerial vehicle (e. g. , a path that “stays” with the vehicle). In a second mode, the processor drives the display to generate a depiction of a fixed HITS flight path that is fixed as to origin and destination and that does not move relative to the craft.

Abstract:
A system and method for reporting unusual aircraft attitude to a pilot includes sensing aircraft attitude, and processing the sensed aircraft attitude to determine when the aircraft attitude exceeds an attitude limit. A three-dimensional directional audio alert is generated that, when heard by the pilot, sounds like it is coming from a direction to which the pilot should maneuver the aircraft to correct the aircraft attitude, and includes a verbal instruction that the pilot should follow correct the aircraft attitude.
