Apparatus For Binding And Trimming A Perfect Bound Book

US Patent:
6443682, Sep 3, 2002
Filed:
Feb 26, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/793671
Inventors:
Jeffrey D. Marsh - Foristell MO 63348
International Classification:
B42B 900
US Classification:
412 16
Abstract:
A binder/trimmer is disclosed in which a book block is placed in a carriage, jogged to align the pages, and then transported to a milling station in which the spine of the book block is milled to roughen the spine, then to an adhesive application station at which a suitable adhesive is applied to the spine, and thence to a binding station at which the spine of the book is brought into engagement with the center portion of a cover and at which a binding clamp forces the cover against the outer faces of the book block proximate the spine, and then to a trimming station. At the trimming station, the book is deposited in a nest and is positioned relative to a trimming blade which is actuated to trim a first edge of the book to a predetermined dimension. The book is then rotated to trim second and third edges thus resulting in a perfect bound book accurately trimmed to a predetermined size. A method of binding and trimming a perfect bound book is also disclosed.

Abstract:
A printing and binding apparatus () is disclosed which can print on demand, bind, and trim a perfect bound book. The apparatus includes one or more text page printers () and a color cover printer (). The text page printers print the text pages of a book and form the text pages into a book block (BB). The color cover printer () prints a cover for the book. The book block and the cover are delivered to a binding station at which the spine (S) of the book block is adhesively bound to the cover. The bound book is then delivered to a trimming station (TS) at which excess margins (are trimmed from the book. A method of printing and binding a perfect bound book on demand is also disclosed.

Apparatus For And Method Of Clamping And Trimming A Perfect Bound Book

US Patent:
2011004, Feb 24, 2011
Filed:
Oct 9, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/576923
Inventors:
Jeffrey D. Marsh - Foristell MO, US
Lynn W. Swenson - Johnsburg IL, US
Assignee:
Perfect Systems, LLC - Foristell MO
International Classification:
B42B 9/00, B26D 7/02
US Classification:
412 1, 412 16, 83452
Abstract:
Apparatus for trimming perfect bound books is disclosed including a clamping assembly and a shearing assembly, preferably powered by electric motors. The clamping assembly includes a fixed anvil and a clamp member movable along a clamp track toward and away from the anvil. The shear assembly includes a shear blade movable along a shear track toward and away from the anvil. Load members are mounted on the clamp track and on the shear track. The clamp assembly and the shear assembly each has an electric motor driving a linear actuator (e.g., a drive screw) which is operatively coupled to its respective load member. A spring or a pair of springs is interposed between the clamp load member and the clamp member and another spring or a pair of springs is interposed between the shear blade and the shear load member. Thus, as the clamp member engages the book and as the shear blade shears through the book and engages the anvil, further movement of the clamp member and the shear blade is prevented. Continued operation of the motors causes these springs to compress and to thus result in differential movement (lost motion) between the clamp member and the clamp load member and between the shear blade and the shear load member. Operation of the motors is terminated upon this differential motion of a predetermined magnitude being sensed.

Apparatus For And Method Of Trimming Of Perfect Bound Books

US Patent:
2011011, May 12, 2011
Filed:
Nov 11, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/944315
Inventors:
Jeffrey D. Marsh - Foristell MO, US
International Classification:
B42C 11/00, B42B 9/00
US Classification:
412 1, 412 11, 412 16
Abstract:
Apparatus for and a method of determining and correcting the position and angularity of an edge of a book to be trimmed relative to a shearing plane is disclosed. The book is movable toward and away from the shearing plane and is rotatable about a rotary axis. A pair of spaced sensors generate an output signal indicative of the edge being proximate each the sensor so that upon each sensor generating its signal at substantially the same time thus indicating that the edge is substantially parallel to the shearing plane and so that if one sensors senses the edge before the other thus indicating that the edge is oriented at an angle relative to the shearing plane. A computer control system corrects the angle and vertically positions the edge so that a predetermined trim line for that edge is substantially in register with the shearing plane.

Abstract:
Apparatus for binding perfect bound books of different thickness is disclosed where the amount of adhesive applied to the spine of the book block may be varied in relation to the thickness of the book block. An adhesive application station is provided which has a rotary driven adhesive application wheel partially immersed in a bath of a liquefied adhesive such that as a portion of the wheel rotates up out of the adhesive, the periphery of the wheel is coated with a layer of adhesive. An area of increased thickness of the adhesive if formed adjacent the top of the wheel so that upon effecting relative movement of the book block and the adhesive application station, adhesive is applied to the spine of the book block. The thickness of the layer of adhesive applied to the spine of the book block may be varied in relation to the thickness of the book block generally in accordance with the formula AT=b+mX, where AT is the adhesive thickness, b is the width of an initial gap between the topmost surface of the wheel and the spine, and where mX is a function of the number of sheets making up the book block, or is a function of the measured thickness of the book block.

Apparatus For And A Method Of Determining Condition Of Hot Melt Adhesive For Binding Of A Perfect Bound Book

US Patent:
2011015, Jun 30, 2011
Filed:
Dec 16, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/970552
Inventors:
Jeffrey D. Marsh - Foristell MO, US
International Classification:
B05D 5/10, B05C 11/00, B05C 3/02, B05D 1/18, G05D 9/12

Abstract:
Apparatus is disclosed for monitoring and signaling when a hot melt adhesive contained in a heated adhesive reservoir should be changed. A wheel is at least partially immersed in the adhesive in the reservoir and is rotated by a motor and a computer controls system controls the operation of the motor. From time to time, the computer control system operates the motor and compares the running current supplied to the motor at which the motor stalls to a predetermined stall running current corresponding to a predetermined viscosity level of the adhesive at which the adhesive exhibits a minimum level of binding characteristics and thus generates a signal to change the adhesive. A method of determining when the adhesive should be changed is also disclosed.
