Laughlin’s Colorado River Heritage Greenway Park and Trail project was chosen as one of the country’s most promising projects designed to protect special places and reconnect Americans to the outdoors. The project, also known as North Reach, is included in President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors (AGO) initiative, which highlights two projects in each of the 50 states that promote conservation and outdoor recreation. Laughlin’s Heritage Greenway Park is under construction and scheduled to open in February 2012. The project consists of 9 miles of trails in the Laughlin area for bicyclists, pedestrians and equestrian riders, and includes expansion of the Laughlin River Walk, fully-developed restrooms and trailheads, picnic sites, shade shelters, fishing piers, and a highway pedestrian bridge overpass and underpass providing access to the Colorado River. The projects highlighted in the America’s Great Outdoors Report, which was compiled by the U.S. Department of Interior, were identified based on their potential to conserve important lands and create recreational opportunities and economic growth for surrounding communities. The $24 million Laughlin project was funded by the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act, $2 million from Clark County, and federal grants. Key development partners have included the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, National Park Service, Laughlin Chamber of Commerce, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitor’s Authority, and other public and private entities. T The Colorado River Heritage Greenway Park and Trails project will be managed in partnership with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the National Parks Service, and Clark County.
