Method Of Reducing Mortality Associated With Congestive Heart Failure Using Hydralazine And Isosorbide Dinitrate

US Patent:
4868179, Sep 19, 1989
Filed:
Apr 22, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/041210
Inventors:
Jay N. Cohn - Minneapolis MN
International Classification:
A61K 3134, A61K 3150
US Classification:
514248
Abstract:
A method of reducing mortality associated with chronic congestive heart failure in a patient with impaired cardiac function and concomitant reduced exercise tolerance, comprising the oral administration to said patient in need of the same of a combination of (a) between about 75 and about 300 milligrams of hydralazine, per day and (b) between about 40 and about 160 milligrams of isosorbide dinitrate, per day.

System And Method For Dynamic Multi-Stage Test Administration For Detection Of Cardiovascular Disease

US Patent:
8636660, Jan 28, 2014
Filed:
Oct 9, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/648168
Inventors:
Jay N. Cohn - Minneapolis MN, US
Assignee:
Regents of the University of Minnesota - St. Paul MN
International Classification:
A61B 5/00
US Classification:
600301, 600509
Abstract:
A system and method for dynamic multi-stage test administration for detection of cardiovascular disease may include performing a first set of tests in a first stage of testing on a patient. Physiological results for each of the tests in the first stage may then be received. Then, based on the physiological results, dynamically determining a set of tests to perform on the subject in a second stage of testing. Additionally, the dynamically determined set of tests in the second stage of testing may be performed on the subject.

Apparatus And Method For Blood Pressure Pulse Waveform Contour Analysis

US Patent:
6689069, Feb 10, 2004
Filed:
May 28, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/157551
Inventors:
Christopher W. Bratteli - Fridley MN
Jay N. Cohn - Minneapolis MN
Stanley M. Finkelstein - St. Louis Park MN
Dennis J. Morgan - Crystal MN
Assignee:
Hypertension Diagnostics, Inc. - Eagan MN
International Classification:
A61B 502
US Classification:
600485, 600481, 600500, 128898
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for processing an arterial blood pressure waveform to extract clinically useful information on the state of the cardiovascular system are disclosed herein. In order to obtain the parameters of the modified Windkessel model, the diastolic portion of a subjects blood pressure waveform is scanned over a plurality of ranges and the range that produces the best fit of data and lowest error estimates are selected. In addition, multiple empirically determined starting values of the ‘A’ parameters are used to find the best fit of the model data to the actual arterial blood pressure waveform data.

Method And Instrument To Measure Vascular Impedance

US Patent:
6623434, Sep 23, 2003
Filed:
Sep 17, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/954673
Inventors:
Charles F. Chesney - Sunfish Lake MN
Stanley M. Finkelstein - St. Louis Park MN
Jay N. Cohn - Minneapolis MN
Assignee:
Hypertension Diagnostics, Inc. - Eagan MN
International Classification:
A61B 5021
US Classification:
600485, 600481
Abstract:
A vascular impedance measurement instrument includes a transducer to obtain a digitized arterial blood pressure waveform. The digitized data is used to determine cardiac output, and to subsequently obtain measurements of impedance parameters using the modified Windkessel model of the arterial system. The instrument is used as an aid in diagnosing, treating and monitoring patients with cardiovascular disease.

Abstract:
The present invention provides methods of treating and preventing mortality associated with heart failure in an African American patient with hypertension and improving oxygen consumption, quality of life and exercise tolerance by administering a therapeutically effective amount of at least one hydralazine compound and at least one of isosorbide dinitrate and isosorbide mononitrate, and, optionally, one or more compounds, such as, for example, a digitalis, a diuretic compound, or a compound used to treat cardiovascular diseases. In the present invention, the hydralazine compound is preferably hydralazine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. Preferred methods of the invention comprise administering hydralazine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof and isosorbide dinitrate.
