Philosophy:
Dr. Wynberg is a Canadian trained Urologist with fellowship training in Urologic Oncology at the National Institutes of Health (National Cancer Insititute) in Bethesda, Maryland. His clinical expertise is in the care of overweight and obese men with prostate cancer. This includes diagnosis, risk assessment and stratification, and treatment. Dr. Wynberg limits his surgical treatment in this patient population to the nerve-sparing, anatomic radical perineal prostatectomy. This procedure is ideally suited for overweight and obese patients, men with previous abdominal surgery such as hernia repairs with or without mesh, and men who are otherwise not ideal robotic prostatectomy candidates.
The anatomic nerve-sparing radical perineal prostatectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that adheres to sound oncologic surgical principles, and in most cases, allows patients to go home the day following surgery. Dr. Wynberg also performs cryotherapy of the prostate in patients who are experiencing PSA rise after external beam radiation or brachytherapy seed implant for localized prostate cancer. In 2007, Dr. Wynberg was pleased to receive a prestigious peer-awarded research grant for his research in the area of prostate cancer in overweight and obese men.
Dr. Wynberg is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada.
Dr. Wynberg co-authored an article that appeared in the December 2007, AUA News on the Diagnosis and Management of Localized Prostate Cancer in Obese Men .
