Method And Apparatus For Crimping A Container Cap

US Patent:
5026237, Jun 25, 1991
Filed:
Jan 24, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/469255
Inventors:
Jan L. Dorfman - Littleton CO
Assignee:
Coors Brewing Company - Golden CO
International Classification:
B21D 5134
US Classification:
413 43
Abstract:
A crimping tool for attaching a cap member to a container neck flange, including a nest member for axially locating the crimping tool at a predetermined position relative to the cap member; a unitary collet member mounted on the nest member for engaging and crimpingly deforming the cap member about the container neck flange; a sleeve member positioned in circumscribing relationship with the collet member in axially displaceable relationship therewith for engaging a lower portion of the collet member and urging the collet member into crimping relationship with the cap member during axial displacement of the sleeve member relative the collet member; and an axial displacement member mechanically linked to the collet member and the sleeve member for selectively axially displacing the sleeve member relative the collet member is disclosed. A method for crimping a cap member including the steps of: positioning a unitary, integrally formed collet member in circumscribing relationship about the cap member; and elastically, inwardly deforming the collet member so as to engage and crimpingly deform the cap member is also disclosed.

Adapter For Use In Tapping A Container

US Patent:
5094365, Mar 10, 1992
Filed:
Jul 31, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/560160
Inventors:
Jan L. Dorfman - Littleton CO
Assignee:
Coors Brewing Company - Golden CO
International Classification:
B67D 500
US Classification:
2224007
Abstract:
An adapter for use with a tap assembly for dispensing a product from a container wherein the adapter has a body portion having separate product and gas passageways with an abutment ledge within the body portion surrounding the product passageway and having a sealing gasket seated thereon and connecting apparatus for connecting the adapter to the container. Dispensing apparatus is secured to the adapter and has a product passageway formed therein and has an abutment surface for contacting the sealing gasket to form a fluid tight seal between the abutment ledge and the abutment surface and wherein the adapter has two differing types of sealing apparatus for sealing the gas passageway wherein a first sealing apparatus is normally in a closed position and is automatically moved to an opened position when the adapter is connected to the container and a second sealing apparatus is normally in an opened position and is moved to a closed position by application of a force thereto.

Closure Assembly For Pressurized Plastic Beverage Container

US Patent:
5038952, Aug 13, 1991
Filed:
Dec 14, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/450924
Inventors:
Jan L. Dorfman - Littleton CO
Assignee:
Coors Brewing Company - Golden CO
International Classification:
B65D 4110
US Classification:
215324
Abstract:
A closure assembly for a pressurized, plastic beverage container having an upper end opening comprising: an annular container neck defining the container upper end opening comprising a radially extending top surface, an axially extending surface, and a lower, generally radially extending surface; a gasket positioned on top of the annular container neck; and a container cap comprising a flat central body positioned in covering relationship with the container opening and in abutting engagement with the gasket; and an annular flange includinngn an axially extending portion positioned in parallel, adjacent, noncompressive relationship with the axially extending surface of the container neck, and a generally radially inwardly extending portion positioned in abutting, compressive contact with the lower, generally radially extending surface of the container neck whereby upwardly directed axial force on the container cap produced by pressurization of the container is resisted by downwardly directed axial force applied by the lower, generally radially extending surface of the container neck to the generally radially inwardly extending portion of the flange of the cap.

Apparatus For Use In Dispensing Fluid From A Container

US Patent:
4739901, Apr 26, 1988
Filed:
Apr 6, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/034899
Inventors:
Jan L. Dorfman - Littleton CO
William C. Christine - Nazareth PA
Assignee:
Adolph Coors Company - Golden CO
International Classification:
B67D 114, F16K 4712
US Classification:
222 1
Abstract:
Dispensing apparatus is attached to a container filled with a fluid and shipped with the container wherein during shipment the dispensing apparatus has two separate seals comprising an operable valve for opening and closing a first passageway, and a sealing member for closing a second passageway and the dispensing apparatus is locked in a closed position. A locking member is provided for preventing accidental movement of the dispensing apparatus and also to provide positive identification that the container has not been tampered with. A self generating pressure applying expandable pouch is located within the container to apply a substantially constant pressure on the fluid so that the fluid may be dispensed from the container. When it is desired to withdraw portions of the fluid from the container, the dispensing apparatus is unlocked and a handle on the dispensing apparatus is moved to an open position to open both seals so that the fluid may flow through the first and second passageways and be withdrawn from the container through a nozzle. The sealing member for the second passageway is locked in the open position so that fluid may be withdrawn from the container as desired.
