US Classification:
606264, 606305
Abstract:
A cannulated bone anchor comprising a self-centering ball-joint suitable for use in a spine stabilization prosthesis which supports the spine while providing for the preservation of spinal motion. The cannulated bone anchor has a deflectable post partially received in a socket of a housing formed in the head of the bone anchor. A centering rod received partially in the post and partially within the housing operates to align the post with the longitudinal axis of the bone anchor. Deflection of the post bends the centering rod which in turn applies a restoring force upon the post. The centering rod includes an inner-superelastic core and an outer polymer sheath.

Interspinous Process Implant Including A Binder And Method Of Implantation

US Patent:
2006006, Mar 23, 2006
Filed:
Mar 31, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/095440
Inventors:
James Zucherman - San Francisco CA, US
Ken Hsu - San Francisco CA, US
Henry Klyce - Piedmont CA, US
Charles Winslow - Walnut Creek CA, US
John Flynn - Walnut Creek CA, US
Steve Mitchell - Pleasant Hill CA, US
Scott Yerby - Montara CA, US
John Markwart - Castro Valley CA, US
Assignee:
St. Francis Medical Technologies, Inc. - Alameda CA
International Classification:
A61F 2/44
US Classification:
623017110
Abstract:
Systems in accordance with embodiments of the present invention can include an implant comprising a spacer for defining a minimum space between adjacent spinous processes, a distraction guide for piercing and distracting an interspinous ligament during implantation, and a binder for limiting or preventing flexion motion of the targeted motion segment. The binder can be secured to a brace associated with the implant during implantation by a capture device. In one embodiment, the capture device includes a fixed piece extending from the brace and a slidable piece associated with the fixed piece. A fastener can be rotated to pinch the binder between the slidable piece and a wall of the brace, securing the binder. A physician need not know the length of the binder prior to implantation, reducing the time required to perform a procedure.

Supplemental Spine Fixation Device And Method

US Patent:
7993374, Aug 9, 2011
Filed:
Oct 30, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/928163
Inventors:
James F. Zucherman - San Francisco CA, US
Ken Y. Hsu - San Francisco CA, US
Charles J. Winslow - Walnut Creek CA, US
Henry A. Klyce - Piedmont CA, US
Assignee:
Kyphon Sarl - Neuchatel
International Classification:
A61B 17/88
US Classification:
606249, 606279
Abstract:
A supplemental spine fixation device and method is used in association with a primary spine fixation device. The supplemental spine fixation device includes a guide and spacer for distracting apart adjacent spinous processes and the device has hook members which hook about the first and second spinous processes. With the spinous processes distracted and the hook members about the spinous processes, the hook members can be rigidly secured to a hub in order to rigidly affix the spinous processes about the spacer. The rigidity between the spinous processes assures that the vertebral bodies will be held rigidly in place in order to promote bone growth and fusion. Further additional freedom of movement between the spacer and hub is accomplished with the spacer being pivotably mounted relative to the hub. The hooks have a tissue distracting lead-in guide for allowing the hooks to be easily urged between spinous processes.

US Classification:
606265, 606256, 606259
Abstract:
An adaptive spinal rod is provided for connecting levels of an adaptive stabilization system to support the spine while providing for the preservation of spinal motion. Embodiments of the adaptive stabilization rod include a ball having an anchor system, a deflection system, a vertical rod system and a connection system. The deflection system provides adaptive stabilization and load-sharing. The adaptive spinal rod connects different levels of the construct in a multilevel construct. The adaptive spinal rod cooperates with the deflection system to further reduce stress exerted upon the bone anchors and spinal anatomy.
