Motor Controller

US Patent:
5206572, Apr 27, 1993
Filed:
Jan 3, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/462934
Inventors:
Samir F. Farag - Roswell GA
James T. Cronvich - Harahan LA
Assignee:
Siemens Energy & Automation, Inc. - Alpharetta GA
International Classification:
H02P 126
US Classification:
318778
Abstract:
A microcomputer-based device that performs the functions of motor starting and overload protection. The starter function is customized for a particular application by storing program steps representing the input command and output control logic peculiar to a given motor in a programmable, non-volatile memory cell. Each set of program steps, which the microcomputer executes, compose an expandable library of such sets representing the different motor circuit applications available for configuring a starter to match its particular application. A configuration can be changed by simply loading into memory the appropriate set of program steps from the library and changing the labels of the inputs and outputs to match the new application.

Method And Apparatus For Sensing A Ground Fault In A Motor Control System

US Patent:
5386183, Jan 31, 1995
Filed:
Jan 18, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/183106
Inventors:
James T. Cronvich - Harahan LA
Samir F. Farag - Roswell GA
Daniel J. De Cicco - Glen Burnie MD
John J. Culligan - Alpharetta GA
Assignee:
Siemens Energy & Automation, Inc. - Alpharetta GA
International Classification:
H02P 300
US Classification:
318434
Abstract:
A motor control unit for protecting a motor against ground fault currents. The unit monitors the currents in each phase of the motor to provide values representative of each phase current. The unit also includes a contactor for opening and closing each phase, wherein the unit controls the contactor based upon the values representative of the phase currents. The contactor is opened when a ground fault situation exists at the motor.

Depth Control Device For An Underwater Cable

US Patent:
6016286, Jan 18, 2000
Filed:
Jun 10, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/094487
Inventors:
Bryant G. Ragan - Metairie LA
James T. Cronvich - Harahan LA
Assignee:
Input/Output, Inc. - Stafford TX
International Classification:
G01V 138
US Classification:
367 17
Abstract:
A depth control device for an underwater cable includes a rotary actuator having a rotating output shaft connected to a swash plate. Rotation of the swash plate by the actuator causes a rocker arm to pivot about an axis transverse to the axis of the output shaft. The rocker arm is drivingly connected to a drive shaft for rotating wings about their pitch axes. The pitch axes of the wings can be perpendicular to and intersecting the axis of the actuator output shaft, enabling the depth control device to be extremely compact.

Distributed Current And Voltage Sampling Function For An Electric Power Monitoring Unit

US Patent:
5369356, Nov 29, 1994
Filed:
Jun 8, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/073913
Inventors:
Michael A. Kinney - Raleigh NC
James T. Cronvich - Harahan LA
Wayne M. Zavis - Raleigh NC
Assignee:
Siemens Energy & Automation, Inc. - Alpharetta GA
International Classification:
G01R 2106, G11C 2702, H02H 318
US Classification:
324142
Abstract:
A low voltage AC electric power monitoring system includes a processor which samples the current and circuit breaker system includes a processor which samples each of the current components at seventeen samples per cycle to obtain current samples representing a single period of the AC power signal. The processor samples the voltage component at different points in the voltage cycle over several cycles to obtain voltage samples representing a single period of the AC power signal.
