We can live longer and healthier if we take responsibility for our own health. Dentistry is progressing beyond the era of drill, fill and bill. The oral/systemic connection has been researched for more than 20 years. There is very strong evidence of the link between the infections of periodontal (gum & bone) disease and heart attack, stroke, diabetes, several cancers, lung infections, low birth weight premature babies and a host of other systemic diseases. Using the new paradigm of treating the cause (infection) of periodontal disease instead of the symptoms can result in healthier individuals. Sleep deprivation including obstructive sleep apnea is a growing problem in this country, Since the American Academy of Sleep Medicine now says a dental appliance can be the treatment of choice, as a dentist trained in dental sleep medicine, I can now offer patients an alternative to a breathing machine. Helping to save lives is more satisfying than creating beautiful smiles procedures.
