US Classification:
422 28
Abstract:
Compostions, and method useful for making such compositions and for using such compositions, which are useful to destroy hydrogen peroxide in a liquid aqueous medium, such as that used to disinfect contact lenses, are disclosed. The composition comprises at least one item containing a hydrogen peroxide destroying component, e. g. , catalase, effective when released in a liquid aqueous medium to destroy or cause the destruction of hydrogen peroxide present in the liquid aqueous medium, and a barrier coating located on the at least one item and acting to substantially prevent the release of the hydrogen peroxide destroying component for a period of time after the composition is initially contacted with a hydrogen peroxide-containing liquid aqueous medium. The barrier coating comprises a water soluble coating component, e. g. , hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, and is formed by a method which comprises applying a mixture comprising water, a ketone and the water soluble coating component to produce at least one precoated item; and removing water and ketone from the precoated item or items.

Inventors:
John Y. Park - Santa Ana CA
James N. Cook - Mission Viejo CA
Anthony J. Dziabo - El Toro CA
Assignee:
Allergan, Inc. - Irvine CA
International Classification:
C11D 1700
US Classification:
510513
Abstract:
A composition and method useful to quickly and effectively indicate whether a functional component such as catalase has been added to a clear solution such as a hydrogen peroxide solution involves compounding with the functional component an effective amount of vitamin B-12 such that when the compounded composition is added to the clear solution, the clear solution turns rose colored. By observing the rose color, the user can determine that the functional component has been added to the clear solution.

Compositions And Methods For Destroying Hydrogen Peroxide

US Patent:
5362647, Nov 8, 1994
Filed:
Feb 12, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/017232
Inventors:
James N. Cook - Mission Viejo CA
John L. Worsley - Irvine CA
Assignee:
Allergan, Inc. - Irvine CA
International Classification:
C12S 900, A01N 2532, A01N 2526, A61L 900
US Classification:
435264
Abstract:
Compositions and methods for destroying hydrogen peroxide, for example, contact lens disinfecting amounts of hydrogen peroxide, are disclosed. The present invention utilizes non-mammalian-derived catalase, for example, catalase obtained as a result of the action of one or more microorganisms such as Micrococcus luteus, Aspergillus niger and mixtures thereof, to promote the destruction of hydrogen peroxide. Such non-mammalian-derived catalase has substantial advantages, e. g. , enhanced stability, relative to bovine catalase, which is conventionally used such contact in lens-relayed applications.
