Fluid Filter And Method Of Construction

US Patent:
4579657, Apr 1, 1986
Filed:
Nov 8, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/669764
Inventors:
James H. Hood - Knoxville TN
Assignee:
Filmax, Incorporated - Knoxville TN
International Classification:
B01D 2502, B01D 2906
US Classification:
210314
Abstract:
The specification discloses a filter apparatus including spirally wound tissue layer filter elements for filtering fluid and a seal between the filter elements to prevent fluid from bypassing the filter elements. A flow tube extends through the center of the filter elements. A resiliently deformable mesh spacer is located on the flow tube between the filter elements to insure formation of a radial passageway therebetween. The seal is applied between the filter elements along their circumferential edges in a melted state and migrates into and between the tissue layers and interstices of the filter elements and the mesh of the spacer. As the seal cools and hardens it adheres to the filter elements and the spacer. A seal may likewise be applied between the filter elements and the flow tube. Application of the seals in this manner prevents fluid flow communication between the area outside of the filter elements and the radial passageway except by means of passage of fluid between the layers of tissue in the filter elements so that the filtering function is maximized.

Axial Flow Filter Having Entry And Exit Filtration Stages And Flow Distribution Means

US Patent:
4773990, Sep 27, 1988
Filed:
Oct 15, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/919069
Inventors:
James H. Hood - Knoxville TN
Assignee:
Filmax, Inc. - Knoxville TN
International Classification:
B01D 2504
US Classification:
210314
Abstract:
The specification discloses improvements in axial flow filters of the type having filter elements constructed of spirally wound tissue layers and having planar fluid entry and exit surfaces located at their opposite axial ends. Entry and exit filtration stages are provided in the form of annular webs of filter media covering the entry and exit surfaces the filter elements to provide additional filtration of fluid entering and exiting the elements. The filter media comprising the entry filtration stage is specially adapted for distributing the flow evenly across the entry surfaces of the filter element to minimize the formation of bypass flow channels between the tissue layers, and for plugging any bypass flow channels that form to effect a distribution of the flow to areas on the entry surfaces where bypass flow channels do not exist. The filter media comprising the exit filtration stage is maintained against the fluid exit surface and sealed thereto so that fluid passing out of the fluid exit surface cannot bypass the filter media.

Oil Sampling System

US Patent:
4548088, Oct 22, 1985
Filed:
Dec 15, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/562396
Inventors:
James H. Hood - Knoxville TN
International Classification:
G01N 120
US Classification:
7386434
Abstract:
An oil sampling system for collecting an oil sample from a receptacle is disclosed. The system includes a head having a vertically disposed central bore. A collection bottle is sealingly attached to the bottom of the head in fluid communication with the central bore. A flexible tube extends from the receptacle to be sampled to the top of the head and into the central bore and is attached to the head by a coupling mechanism which selectively forms a seal between the head and the flexible tube. A vacuum mechanism in fluid communication with the central bore is used to selectively produce a partial vacuum for drawing the oil to be sampled into the flexible tube and into the collection bottle. The flexible tube extends into the interior of the collection bottle and oil to be sampled only contacts the flexible tube and the collection bottle.
