Diamond Tool Inserts Pre-Fixed With Braze Alloys And Methods To Manufacture Thereof

Diamond Tool Inserts Pre-Fixed With Braze Alloys And Methods To Manufacture Thereof

US Patent:
2004015, Aug 12, 2004
Filed:
Dec 23, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/744688
Inventors:
Michael Zimmerman - Westerville OH, US
Dwight Dyer - Kingston OH, US
James McHale - Worthington OH, US
Scott Ries - Grove City OH, US
James Graham - Gahanna OH, US
York Falkenberg - Roedermark, DE
Dirk Heinemann - Bad Homburg, DE
Assignee:
General Electric Company
International Classification:
B23K031/00
US Classification:
228/248100
Abstract:
A superabrasive tool blank whose carbide side is affixed with a suitable braze alloy, for subsequent shaping into desired tool geometry and induction-brazed forming a cutting tool. The use of the pre-coated braze alloy in the tool blank forming cutting tools allows the direct brazing of the superabrasive blank onto a tool insert, thus minimizing operations and labor time involved for the shaping and handling of the braze substrate in the process of the prior art, i.e., the brazing of the assembly of the superabrasive tool blank, braze alloy, and tool insert. The pre-brazed blank can be conveniently used in automated brazing operations for forming cutting tools.

Abrasive Diamond Composite And Method Of Making Thereof

Abrasive Diamond Composite And Method Of Making Thereof

US Patent:
2003019, Oct 16, 2003
Filed:
Jun 4, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/454033
Inventors:
Mark D'Evelyn - Niskayuna NY, US
Michael Loh - Marbach, DE
James McHale - Worthington OH, US
Kristi Narang - Voorheesville NY, US
Aaron Saak - Gahanna OH, US
Steven Webb - Worthington OH, US
International Classification:
C09C001/68, B24D003/02, C09K003/14
US Classification:
051/309000
Abstract:
An abrasive diamond composite formed from coated diamond particles and a matrix material. The diamonds have a protective coating formed from a refractory material having a composition MCN, that prevents corrosive chemical attack of the diamonds by the matrix material. The abrasive diamond composite may further include an infiltrant, such as a braze material. Alternatively, the abrasive diamond composite may include a plurality of coated diamond particles and a braze material filling interstitial spaces between the coated diamond particles. Methods of making such abrasive diamond composites are also disclosed.

Surface Modification Of Coated Abrasives To Enhance Their Adhesion In Resin Bond Tools

Surface Modification Of Coated Abrasives To Enhance Their Adhesion In Resin Bond Tools

US Patent:
2003000, Jan 9, 2003
Filed:
Jul 9, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/901159
Inventors:
James McHale - Worthington OH, US
International Classification:
C09C001/68, C09K003/14, B24D003/00
US Classification:
051/298000, 051/307000, 051/309000, 051/308000, 051/293000, 428/403000, 428/404000, 423/335000
Abstract:
The retention of metal-coated superabrasive particles in a resin bond matrix is improved by incorporating a silane coupling agent into a mixture of metal-coated superabrasive particles and resin bond matrix. The silane can incorporated by providing a metal-coated superabrasive particle treated with a silane coupling agent for adding to the resin bond matrix. Alternatively, the silane can reacted into the resin bond matrix and then the metal-coated superabrasive particles added. Both diamond and cubic boron nitride are useful in the invention.

Silver-Coated Abrasives, Tools Containing Silver-Coated Abrasives, And Applications Of These Tools

US Patent:
2002016, Nov 7, 2002
Filed:
Feb 2, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/776141
Inventors:
James McHale - Worthington OH, US
James Dailey - Westerville OH, US
Markus Jakobuss - Columbus OH, US
Daniel Riehle - Powell OH, US
Juergen Dungen - Buerstadt, DE
International Classification:
B24B019/04
US Classification:
451/048000
Abstract:
Flute grinding cemented carbide workpieces with a diamond containing resin bond grinding wheel is improved by restricting the diamond to comprise a silver-coated diamond; conducting the grinding in the presence of a lubricant consisting of only straight oil; and conducting the grinding at a wheel speed of less than about 30 m/s and preferably about 20 m/s. The preferred diamond is coated with about 25% and 75% silver by weight.

Method For Producing A Sintered, Supported Polycrystalline Diamond Compact

US Patent:
2004006, Apr 1, 2004
Filed:
Jul 17, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/621710
Inventors:
Ram Raghavan - Westerville OH, US
James McHale - Worthington OH, US

Assignee:
General Electric Company
International Classification:
B32B009/00
US Classification:

Abstract:
A sintered supported polycrystalline diamond compact (PCD) having improved abrasion resistance properties is manufactured by subjecting diamond crystals placed in adjacency with a metal carbide support containing a catalyst/sintering aid to high pressure/high temperature (HP/HT) processing. Said PCD compact comprises: a) a body of diamond crystals comprising a mixture of about 60 wt % to about 80 wt. % of coarse fraction having an average particle size ranging from about 30 to 60 m and a fine fraction being about not substantially greater than about 20% of the average particle size of said coarse fraction; and b) a support body comprising about 12 wt. % or less of a catalyst/sintering.
