Coiled Tubing Inspection System Using Image Pattern Recognition

US Patent:
2003011, Jun 26, 2003
Filed:
Dec 22, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/032272
Inventors:
Haoshi Song - Sugar Land TX, US
James Terry - Houston TX, US
James Estep - Houston TX, US
International Classification:
G06K009/00
US Classification:
382/152000
Abstract:
An inspection system for identifying predetermined features in coiled tubing, comprising a computer system configured to execute pattern recognition software and a plurality of imaging devices configured to capture video images of coiled tubing as the tubing passes by the imaging devices. Images captured by the inspection system are transmitted to the computer system and the pattern recognition software analyzes the image, extracts features from the image, and generates an indication if a defect is identified in the images. The computer system reads a counter signal to identify the longitudinal location along the coiled tubing at which the defect is located. The counter signal may also be used to enable or disable the inspection system. The system is capable of real-time processing or post processing by optionally storing the video images. The coiled tubing includes longitudinal striping as a reference to specify the annular position of a predetermined feature.

Coiled Tubing Connector

US Patent:
6761574, Jul 13, 2004
Filed:
Mar 24, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/534685
Inventors:
Haoshi Song - Sugar Land TX
James W. Estep - Houston TX
James B. Terry - Houston TX
Thomas Platt Wilson - Lafayette LA
Assignee:
Halliburton Energy Services, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
H01R 1362
US Classification:
439320, 285 39
Abstract:
A coiled tubing connector includes a male and female housing. A rotating ring having threads is disposed on the male housing. When the male housing is joined to the female housing, the threads of the rotating ring threadingly engage threads disposed on the internal circumference of the female housing. The male housing also includes splines which align with grooves on the female housing. Situated on both the male and female housing are electrical contacts which themselves engage when the housings are joined. The electrical contacts are connected to wires embedded in the composite tubing so that electrical power or data signals from one length of composite tubing can pass through the connector to another length of coiled tubing. The ends of the composite tubing are affixed to both the male and female housings through a compression fitting.

A plurality of wedge members extend axially from the upper housing and into engagement with the angle cam. Drive trains are connected to the wedge members to move the wedge members toward and away from the angle cam so as to pivot the lower housing at the universal joint and change the angle and azimuth of the lower housing with respect to the upper housing. The lower housing is connected to a bearing pack supporting a drill bit such that upon changing the angle and azimuth of the lower housing, the direction of the drilling of the drill bit is also changed. The steering assembly being connected to composite tubing having conductors in the wall thereof for conducting data and commands between the steering assembly and a processor at the surface and for providing power to the steering assembly. Data on the position of the bit is transmitted to a processor which determines the direction of drilling and selectively transmits commands to the steering assembly to change the bend angle and direction of the drilling of the bit.

In the one embodiment, the work string includes composite tubing having electrical conductors embedded within the walls, the conductors enabling power transmission and two way communication between the surface and the sensor or detectors downhole so that real time data can be sensed and communicated. Isolation packers are actuated via electrical signals from the surface communicated to the bottom hole assembly via the conductors. A detector located in the bottom hole assembly may be provided to detect perforations or other anomalies in the casing, such as joints, enabling the surface controller to position packers properly in blank segments of casing so that well intervals can be properly isolated and the adjacent formation effectively treated.
