Method Programming And Operating A Wheelchair Having Tilt And Recline Functions

US Patent:
6715784, Apr 6, 2004
Filed:
Oct 19, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/040279
Inventors:
James M. Koerlin - Broomfield CO
Mark E. Greig - Longmont CO
Assignee:
Sunrise Medical HHG Inc. - Longmont CO
International Classification:
B62B 100
US Classification:
280650, 2803041, 297330
Abstract:
A method of operating a wheelchair during an un-recline process involves a wheelchair having tilt and recline functions, the wheelchair including a seat frame, a tilt actuator for tilting the seat frame, a back frame, a recline actuator for reclining the back frame. A sensor for determining the angle of recline is provided. A controller for controlling the tilt actuator and recline actuator is also provided. The controller is provided with a plurality of preprogrammed sequences for moving the seat frame and the back frame during an unrecline procedure. The sequences include tilting the seat frame as an initial part of the unrecline sequence, wherein the sequences are a function of the initial angle of recline at the initiation of the recline sequence. An initial angle of recline at the initiation of a recline sequence is determined, and the back frame is unreclined according to one of the preprogrammed sequences in response to the determined initial angle of recline.

Method Of Programming And Operating Tilt And Recline Functions In A Wheelchair

US Patent:
6588792, Jul 8, 2003
Filed:
May 31, 2000
Appl. No.:

Sunrise Medical HHG Inc. - Longmont CO
International Classification:
B62B 100
US Classification:
280650, 2503041, 297330
Abstract:
A method of operating a wheelchair during an un-recline process, where the wheelchair includes a seat frame and a back frame, includes positioning the wheelchair user in the wheelchair with the back frame reclined, and rotating the seat frame of the wheelchair so that the seat frame and the back frame form an angle that is within the range of from about 80 degrees to about 120 degrees. The back frame is unreclined by rotating the back frame and the seat frame while maintaining the angle between the seat frame and the back frame within the range of from about 80 degrees to about 120 degrees.

Allen B. Killebrew - Longmont CO, US
Assignee:
Sunrise Medical HHG, Inc. - Longmont CO
International Classification:
B62D 61/12
US Classification:
2803041, 180 651, 180209, 180907, 2802501
Abstract:
A personal mobility vehicle includes an base unit having a frame and front and rear pivot arms pivotally mounted at respective front and rear pivot points. The front and rear pivot arms support casters. A drive unit having a ground engaging mid-wheel drive wheel is connected to the frame. A linkage connects the front and rear pivot arms to each other in a manner such that an upward or downward rotation of one of the pivot arms about its pivot point causes rotation of the other pivot arm about its pivot point in an opposite rotational direction. The base unit may also include a drive unit that is pivotally supported on the base unit by a torque arm and a suspension system that includes a suspension stop. The torque arm selectively disengages the suspension stop to allow movement of the front caster wheel in response to the terrain traversed.
