Gelled Printing Ink Compositions

US Patent:
6641650, Nov 4, 2003
Filed:
Feb 26, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/793867
Inventors:
Conard E. Kaiser - Houston TX 77092
Jock R. Collins - Houston TX 77092
James R. Collins - Houston TX 77092
International Classification:
C09D 1102
US Classification:
106 3113, 106 3127, 106 3128, 106 3135, 106 316, 106 3175, 106 3186, 106 319, 25231501, 2523151, 2523154, 524239, 524247, 524249, 524556
Abstract:
A smooth stable viscous gelled printing ink composition comprising a mixture of water, a gelling agent, a chelating agent, and a colorant or pigment, property enhancing additives evenly dispersed into the mixture, and an alkaline electrolyte viscosity increasing agent that raises the pH of the mixture and forms a smooth homogeneous stable gel with a viscosity level having the consistency of a custard or jelly. In addition to the colorants or pigments, additives may also include drying oils, resins, surfactants, film forming components, water flight agents, and other additives. The stabilized gel prevents separation and settling of the homogeneously suspended colorants, pigments, and property enhancing additives, and significantly improves storage stability. The ink compositions do not require shaking, stirring, or mixing prior to use are fast drying on paper, and do not dry on the printing press, in the storage containers, or in the ink jet or bubble jet injector nozzles. The gelled ink compositions with property enhancing additives also have improved non rub-off characteristics, excellent printability, high color strength, good water balance, less mist, and sharp halftone reproduction.

Method For Obtaining Polymer/Bitumen Blends With Improved Stability And Polymer Efficiency

US Patent:
H14842, Sep 5, 1995
Filed:
Nov 30, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/160005
Inventors:
James H. Collins - Houston TX
Assignee:
Shell Oil Company - Houston TX
International Classification:
C08L 9500
US Classification:
524 59
Abstract:
The present invention is an improvement in a process for producing a blend of bitumen and a block copolymer of a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon and a conjugated diene comprising mixing from 88 to 99. 5 weight percent of bitumen with 0. 5 to 12 weight percent copolymer at 135. degree. to 250. degree. C. , agitating the mixture for at least 30 minutes, adding 0. 01 to 2 weight percent sulfur and maintaining the mixture under agitation for at least 30 minutes. The improvement comprises utilizing high shear mixing at a shear rate of at least 10,000 second. sup. -1 to provide said agitation.

Asphalt Composition And Method

US Patent:
6074469, Jun 13, 2000
Filed:
May 1, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/071560
Inventors:
James H. Collins - Houston TX
Glenn R. Jones - Sandy UT
Assignee:
Petro Source Refining Partners - Houston TX
International Classification:
C09D19500
US Classification:
1062731
Abstract:
A paving asphalt composition for improving the durability and longevity of asphalt road surfaces is disclosed. The paving asphalt composition includes asphalt base stock, heavy residuum of re-refined motor oil, and a chemical modifier. The heavy residuum of re-refined motor oil preferably has an API gravity of at least about 12, a kinematic viscosity greater than about 400 centistokes at 140. degree. F. , a flash point greater than about 400. degree. F. and a mass loss less than about 3%. The paving asphalt composition may also include a polymer. A method of forming the paving asphalt composition and a method of paving roads are also disclosed.

Fishing Apparatus

US Patent:
4229900, Oct 28, 1980
Filed:
Aug 16, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/934320
Inventors:
James R. Collins - Houston TX
International Classification:
A01K 9100
US Classification:
43 4311
Abstract:
Fishing apparatus, including a relatively short tubular cylinder around which fishing line is wound, the cylinder having a diametric crossbar adapted to be held by one of the hands of the user. The cylinder may have a raised rib or flange around each of its ends to assist in retaining the line thereon. At one side of the cylinder, an inwardly flared recess is provided adjacent the end of the crossbar, whereby the crossbar may be grasped by the fingers of one hand while the thumb of that hand is disposed in the flared recess in a position to be useful in controlling the line. Mirror image flared recesses may be provided, one at each end of the crossbar, in positions whereby one may be used when the drum is held in one hand and the other may be used when the drum is held in the opposite hand. The apparatus is, therefore, adapted for use by either righthanded or lefthanded persons. Casting of the line is accomplished by swinging the free end of the line in a circle and then releasing it at a rapid velocity.
