Collapsible Canopy With Auto Erect Roof Support Structure

US Patent:
4947884, Aug 14, 1990
Filed:
May 24, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/356111
Inventors:
James P. Lynch - Lakewood CO
International Classification:
E04H 1518
US Classification:
135 97
Abstract:
A canopy shelter has a plurality of corner support forming legs that may be positioned on a support surface. Scissor assemblies interconnect adjacent ones of the corner supports and are each pivotally connected at one portion to the top ends of the respective corner supports and are each pivotally connected at another portion to slide brackets slideably mounted on each of the respective corner supports. Roof support members are pivotally connected to a respective slide bracket on a corner support. Thus, the framework may be collapsed in a stored state yet expanded to an expanded state by spreading the corner members apart from one another. This automatically raises the apex which may also include a center post structure. Latches are provided to retain the slide brackets in position to hold the framework in the expanded state. A flexible covering is centrally supported by the apex to form a canopy top, and cables may be provided between the top ends of the corner supports and the apex to further support the flexible covering.

Collapsible Canopy With Telescoping Roof Support Structure

US Patent:
4779635, Oct 25, 1988
Filed:
Aug 26, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/089441
Inventors:
James P. Lynch - Lakewood CO
International Classification:
E04H 1518, E04H 1550
US Classification:
135 97
Abstract:
A canopy structure is provided and includes a framework unit and a flexible covering. The framework unit is formed by a plurality of upright corner members and a plurality of roof support members that are pivotally connected at the top ends of the corner members and, in an erected position, extend upwardly and inwardly to a central apex where they are pivotally connected to one another. The roof support members are formed of extendable sections which preferably telescope with respect to one another so that the framework unit may move into a collapsed state with the corner support and roof support members oriented in closely spaced, parallel relation. Latches are provided to prevent the framework unit from collapsing from the erected position. Constraining and support structure, preferably in the form of scissor assemblies, interconnect adjacent corner support members to prevent them from moving apart past the erect state. The scissor assemblies have one portion pivotally connected to the tops of its associated corner supports and another portion pivotally connected to slide brackets on its associated corner support member.

Configurable Shade Structure Including A Kit And Method Therefor

US Patent:
5918614, Jul 6, 1999
Filed:
Jan 18, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/183066
Inventors:
James P. Lynch - Lakewood CO
International Classification:
E04H 1530
US Classification:
135 95
Abstract:
A canopy structure, kit and method permits a user to custom configure a canopy shelter is almost unlimited curvilinear shapes. To accomplish this, a flexible sheet that is elastic in at least one, but preferably two dimensions may be secured over an area to be sheltered. Anchors connect the sheet either directly to the surface, such as the ground, or to an object, such as a tree or building, secured to the surface. A support pole is interposed between the surface and the sheet; and this support pole is sufficiently long to deform the sheet in the direction(s) of elasticity and thus exert a compression force on the pole. A plurality of support poles of varying lengths may be formed from identical pole sections, and base plates and dome elements may be used on the poles. The anchors are formed to engage the edge margin of the sheet at random locations, and these anchors, or alternative clasps, may engage the central portion of the sheet so that even greater design flexibility is possible. The sheet is preferably spandex and may be coated with protective materials, and it may be printed with a desired pattern.

Support Stand For Pole-Like Objects

US Patent:
4801123, Jan 31, 1989
Filed:
Apr 16, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/039097
Inventors:
James P. Lynch - Lakewood CO
International Classification:
F16M 1300
US Classification:
248524
Abstract:
A support stand for a pole-like object includes a base member and a plurality of legs that slideably engage the base member at equiangularly aligned positions. Preferably the base member is tubular, and a primary leg is rigidly attached thereto. Two or more legs are rigidly attached to mounting sleeves that slide onto the tubular base into a nested position that presents a smooth visual appearance. Various alignment structures may be used to equiangularly align all of the legs. An upper end of the base member/leg assembly may be provided with adjustable clamping structure to further secure a received pole-like object; an auxillary base may also be used with the base member receiving a shank on the auxillary base which in turn receives the pole-like object.
