Abstract:
A manufacturing system and manufacturing method for adjusting the performance of manufacturing operations or steps in manufacturing components having three-dimensional external structural characteristics. An embodiment of the system broadly comprises: (a) a plurality of manufacturing operations for processing a component having three-dimensional external structural characteristics; (b) at least one analytical device for analyzing at least one characteristic of the component after the performance of one or more manufacturing operations to generate a component data set; (c) at least one data storage device for storing the generated component data sets and for providing at least a relevant portion of accumulated component data; and (d) a communication mechanism for transmitting at least a relevant portion of accumulated component data to one or more manufacturing operations so that the performance thereof can be adjusted in response to the transmitted portion of accumulated component data. An embodiment of the method broadly comprises the following steps: (a) providing a component having three-dimensional external structural characteristics; (b) providing at least a relevant portion of accumulated component data comprising at least two different component data sets; and (c) performing a manufacturing step on the component to provide a processed component, wherein the at least relevant portion of accumulated component data is used to adjust the manner in which the manufacturing step is performed.

Douglas Louder - Cincinnati OH, US
Timothy Heitzman - Maineville OH, US
James Randolph - Mason OH, US
International Classification:
G06F 19/00
US Classification:
700175000, 700177000
Abstract:
A system which broadly comprises: (a) an NC machine having at least one machining tool; (b) a smart image acquisition device that measures at least one characteristic of the machining tool to generate acquired data from the measured machining tool; (c) optionally a machining tool program that uses the acquired data to control the operational use of the measured machining tool by the NC machine or to determine the operational condition of the measured machining tool or the NC machine. Also disclosed is a method which broadly comprises the following steps: (a) providing a machining tool from an NC machining operation; (b) measuring at least one characteristic of the machining tool with a smart image acquisition device to generate acquired data from the measured machining tool; (c) optionally using the acquired data to control the operational use of the measured machining tool by the NC machining operation or to determine the operational condition of measured machining tool or NC machine.

Transport System For Workpieces

US Patent:
5669751, Sep 23, 1997
Filed:
May 9, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/239776
Inventors:
James R. Hoffman - Cincinnati OH
Robert F. Massmann - Wilmington OH
Assignee:
Cincinnati Milacron Inc. - Cincinnati OH
International Classification:
B65G 3500
US Classification:
414751
Abstract:
A machine guard has an opening with a detachable door; i. e. , sliding tracks and hinges are not used for door support. When an outside loader arm and its part grippers move to the door, the door is unlatched from the guard and attached to the arm. The arm and grippers then move through the opening, taking the door away from the opening.

Filed:
Dec 6, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/312595
Inventors:
Xinjun WAN - Shanghai, CN
Guju Song - Shanghai, CN
Kevin George Harding - Niskayuna NY, US
Shukuan Xu - Shanghai, CN
Steven Robert Hayashi - Niskayuna NY, US
Robert William Tait - Niskayuna NY, US
James Joseph Hoffman - Cincinnati OH, US
Charles Walter Muchmore - Clarksville OH, US
Matthew Michael Gluesenkamp - Latham NY, US
International Classification:
B24B 51/00, G01B 11/24
US Classification:
451 5, 356612, 356602
Abstract:
A distance measurement system comprises an optical distance sensor configured to generate a light beam, a first optical module, and a processor. The first optical module is configured to receive the light beam, and generate and selectively transmit a plurality of light beams having different light channels for projection onto one or more points of an object to generate one or more reflected light beams scattered from the respective one or more points of the object, and capture and transmit the one or more reflected light beams into the optical distance sensor to retrieve a plurality of distance data to the respective one or more points of the object. The processor is configured to process the distance data to determine position information of the respective one or more points of the object. A distance measurement method is also presented.

Method For Turning A Workpiece

US Patent:
5471900, Dec 5, 1995
Filed:
Apr 25, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/232971
Inventors:
George E. Corwin - Cincinnati OH
James R. Hoffman - Cincinnati OH
Assignee:
Cincinnati Milacron Inc. - Cincinnati OH
International Classification:
B23B 100
US Classification:
82 111
Abstract:
In a two-axis turning machine, the cutting tool unit machines a first diameter of a workpiece portion of barstock extending from a main spindle chuck. A special subspindle chuck rotating in the same direction advances axially, grasps the workpiece as it is cut off from the barstock, and retracts. The barstock is fed through the first chuck for subsequent first operation machining and located against a stop which is independent of the tool slides. The subspindle chuck rotation is reversed, displacing the first-generated workpiece axis from the subspindle axis, and a second diameter, eccentric to the first diameter, is formed by the cutting tool unit in a second operation.

Fluid Strainer With Blockage Detection

US Patent:
5049263, Sep 17, 1991
Filed:
Jun 25, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/543004
Inventors:
James R. Hoffman - Cincinnati OH
Michael A. Ward - Cincinnati OH
Assignee:
Cincinnati Milacron Inc. - Cincinnati OH
International Classification:
B01D 3514
US Classification:
210 86
Abstract:
A strainer cup strains a flow of particle-bearing fluid. When blocked, unstrained fluid overflows the cup spilling into a chamber. A switch detects a level of fluid and signals a blocked strainer cup condition, as the chamber drains off the unstrained fluid.
