Filed:
Aug 14, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/218780
Inventors:
Donald Walter Bartch - York PA, US
James Francis Edwards - Lancaster PA, US
Assignee:
Thomson Licensing - Boulogne-Billancourt
International Classification:
H01J 31/00
US Classification:
313479, 313477 R
Abstract:
The invention is a cathode-ray tube (CRT) and method of manufacturing the CRT having a contrast enhancing coating on the exterior surface of the viewing faceplate. The contrast enhancing coating reduces the transmission of faceplate of the CRT by about 50%. The coating also yields gloss values in the range of 70 to 90. The manufacture comprises the steps of preparing an intermediate formulation containing a hydrolyzed organic silicate, diluting the intermediate formulation with an organic solvent and adding a contrast enhancing material to provide a final formulation, spraying the final formulation onto the faceplate to form the coating, heating the faceplate to cure the coating, and rinsing the coating, thereby forming a stable contrast enhancing coating on the faceplate.

Method And Apparatus For Maintaining Spacing Between Tension Focus Mask Strands In A Tension Focus Mask

US Patent:
6717345, Apr 6, 2004
Filed:
Dec 21, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/742616
Inventors:
Richard LaPeruta, Jr. - Lititz PA
Donald Walter Bartch - York PA
James Francis Edwards - Lancaster PA
Assignee:
Thomson Licensing S.A. - Boulogne Cedex
International Classification:
H01J 2980
US Classification:
313407, 313402
Abstract:
A method and apparatus of maintaining spacing between tension focus mask strands in a tension focus mask. The method includes providing a tension focus mask comprising busbars with crosswires connected therebetween. A permanent adhesive is applied to the screen-side of the mask strands. Next, novel non-permanent horizontal guide members are attached to the gun-side of the mask strands, where an adhesive is applied to the guide member before the guide members are applied to the mask. The guide members maintain the vertical mask strand spacing during: (1) the application of the horizontal crosswires to the screen-side of the mask and (2) the subsequent thermal processing. The thermal processing cures the adhesive on the screen-side of the mask, thereby: (1) permanently attaching the crosswires to the mask strands and (2) volatilizing the adhesive on the gun-side of the mask strands such that the non-permanent guide member detach from the mask strands.

The cathode ray tube includes an evacuated envelope enclosing a luminescent screen, a focus mask, and a support frame having at least two long sides for supporting the focus mask between the electron gun and the screen within the cathode ray tube. The focus mask has an active array area formed of a plurality of strands and cross wires separated by an insulating material and defining a plurality of focusing apertures within the array area. A border is attached to the strands opposite the insulating material along the upper and lower outer edges of the active array area. The borders extend into the active array area such that the cross wires overlie a portion of the borders and the borders form focusing apertures with the strands along the upper and lower edges of the array.
