Apparatus And Methods For Articular Cartilage Defect Repair

US Patent:
6017348, Jan 25, 2000
Filed:
May 30, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/866830
Inventors:
Rickey D. Hart - Plainville MA
F. Alan Barber - Frisco TX
James C. Chow - Mount Vernon IL
Assignee:
Innovasive Devices, Inc. - Marlborough MA
International Classification:
A61B 1700
US Classification:
606 79
Abstract:
A bone plug removal and emplacement tool includes a cylindrical cutting element having a proximal cutting edge and a cutting tooth. The outer surface of the cutting element can include an integral shoulder (e. g. , in lieu of a replaceable outer sheath) that is spaced-apart from the proximal cutting edge and that engages the surface of the bone to define a depth stop for the cutting edge. An additional cylindrical element can be disposed within the cutting element. The proximal end of that additional element, which is referred to as a "harvester," is substantially aligned with the proximal end of the cutting element to receive a plug cut from the bone. The harvester can be slidably withdrawn from the cutting element to facilitate transplating the bone plug at another location. For this purpose, a stem or plunger can be slidably inserted and moved in the harvester to dislodge the plug.

Surgically Implanted Time Release Medication For Post-Surgical Treatment Of A Patient

US Patent:
2003022, Dec 11, 2003
Filed:
Jun 8, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/165549
Inventors:
James Chow - Mount Vernon IL, US
International Classification:
A61F013/00, A61K009/54
US Classification:
424/458000
Abstract:
A method of administering a medication to a post operative patient with the medication being administered at the site of a surgery performed on the patient. The medication is formed into a time release capsule () having a core () of the medication which is dispensed within the body over a predetermined period of time. The capsule is covered with a coating () that dissolves within the body. The time release medication is not released until the covering is sufficiently dissolved to expose the medication. During surgery, the surgeon places placing a plurality of capsules (-) in the patient's body at the surgery site. The respective capsules have different coating thicknesses so the medication contained therein is dispensed at different periods of time after the surgery as a function of the thickness of the coating.

Arthoscopic Arthroplasty Procedure For The Repair Or Reconstruction Of Arthritic Joints

US Patent:
2007027, Nov 22, 2007
Filed:
Apr 10, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/401500
Inventors:
James Chow - Mount Vernon IL, US
International Classification:
A61F 2/44
US Classification:
623017110
Abstract:
An arthoscopic arthroplasty procedure for the repair or reconstruction of an arthritic joint (J) in a person's hand or foot. A first opening hole () is made in a joint membrane (), as is a second opening () for insertion of an arthoscope () into the joint to view the joint. A probe () is inserted into the joint to scrape away and remove arthritic material and diseased bone. A canula () is then inserted into the one opening for graft material, in the form of compressed pellets (), to be delivered to the joint. As the pellets exit the canula, they expand to a size which prevents their subsequent withdrawal from the joint through either hole. With the arthoscope, the surgeon is able to see that all the arthritic and diseased material is first removed from the joint, that the appropriate amount of graft material is then inserted into the joint to provide the cushioning required between the bones.

Apparatus And Methods For Articular Cartilage Defect Repair

US Patent:
5782835, Jul 21, 1998
Filed:
Mar 7, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/399428
Inventors:
Rickey D. Hart - Plainville MA
F. Alan Barber - Frisco TX
James C. Chow - Mount Vernon IL
Assignee:
Innovasive Devices, Inc. - Marlborough MA
International Classification:
A61B 1700
US Classification:
606 79
Abstract:
A bone plug removal tool is described. The tool includes a cylindrical cutting element having an external surface and having an internal surface defining an internal bore extending along a longitudinal axis of the cutting element from a proximal end to a distal end. A cutting tooth is located at the proximal end of the cutting element and extends into the internal bore. A replaceable outer cylindrical sheath is arranged concentrically around the external surface of the cylindrical cutting element. A bone plug emplacement tool to be used in conjunction the removal tool is also disclosed. The emplacement tool includes a cylindrical element having an internal surface defining an internal bore extending along a longitudinal axis of the element from a proximal end. The internal surface further defines an internal step adjacent a distal end of the element. A stem is disposed for co-axial movement within the element, the stem having a proximal end disposed within the internal bore.

Strap For Treating A Deformed Toe Or Finger

US Patent:
2004001, Jan 29, 2004
Filed:
Jul 25, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/206467
Inventors:
James Chow - Mount Vernon IL, US
International Classification:
A61F005/00, A61F013/00, A61F013/06
US Classification:
602/061000, 602/022000, 602/030000
Abstract:
A support () worn on a person's foot (F) or hand to correct a deformity to a toe (T) or finger. A first sleeve () of a support material is sized to fit over the adjacent toe (T). A second sleeve () of the material is sized to fit over another toe (T). A band () of material extends between the two sleeves. The band of material fits over the deformed toe when the support is worn and holds the deformed toe in a position in which it does not overlay the adjacent toe but extends generally side-by-side with it. Another embodiment of the support can be worn on a person's hand to treat a deformed finger. The support can be incorporated into a sock () or glove ().

Finger Splint For Treating Mallet Finger Condition

US Patent:
2003013, Jul 17, 2003
Filed:
Jan 11, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/043579

Abstract:
A splint () worn by sufferers of mallet finger. The splint comprises a sleeve () sized to readily fit over the end of a finger (F) having a damaged tendon causing the mallet finger. The sleeve extends at least as far as the DIP joint of the finger. A pocket () is formed in the sleeve and a curved rigid plate () having an elbow () formed intermediate its ends is positioned along the underside of the finger. A padding material () fits between the plate and the finger to cushion the finger. The curvature of the plate holds the outer end of the finger in a hyperextended position with the DIP joint immobilized so to promote healing of the finger.

Rod And Plate Bone Fixation Device For Persons With Osteophorosis

US Patent:
2003013, Jul 17, 2003
Filed:
Jan 11, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/044054
Inventors:
James Y. Chow - Mount Vernon IL, US
International Classification:
A61B017/58
US Classification:
606/064000
Abstract:
A bone fixation device () employs a rod () inserted longitudinally of a broken bone (B) and bridges a fracture (Fx) in the bone. Screws () are inserted transversely of the bone to hold the rod in place. A relatively thin plate () is contoured to fit against the bone on opposite thereof. The plates are form fitted against the sides of the bone and the screws are inserted into the bone through spaced openings () in the plates. The heads () of the screws are drawn up against the side of the plate and washers () are used with to distribute the forces exerted on the bone by the head of the screw. The plates prevent the screws from sinking into the bone and creating stresses which might cause displacement of the reduced fracture.
