US Classification:
428 358, 428 353, 428 343, 428 357, 428 369, 428 3691, 428457, 428458, 428461, 428462, 428480, 4284231, 4284258, 427239, 427327, 523100
Abstract:
A polymer and coating composition containing the polymer are provided that are useful in coating applications such as, for example, food or beverage packaging containers. The polymer preferably includes a backbone having one or more polycyclic groups. In one embodiment, the polymer is a polyester and, more preferably, a polyester-urethane polymer. In one embodiment, the one or more polycyclic groups is a tricyclic or higher group.

Bisphenol A And Aromatic Glycidyl Ether-Free Coatings

US Patent:
8197904, Jun 12, 2012
Filed:
Mar 18, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/051283
Inventors:
Peter Mayr - Laxenburg, AT
Paul Cooke - Singapore, SG
Trevor Fielding - Cogges, GB
Ronald L. Goodwin - Pittsburgh PA, US
Greg Paulson - Slippery Rock PA, US
James Robinson - Pittsburgh PA, US
Anthony Violleau - La Floresta, ES
Assignee:
Valspar Sourcing, Inc. - Minneapolis MN
International Classification:
B05D 7/14, B05D 7/22, B05D 7/04
US Classification:
427404, 427402, 4274071, 4274124, 428483, 524431
Abstract:
Disclosed are Bisphenol A (BPA), Bisphenol F, Bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE), and Bisphenol F diglycidyl ether (BFDGE)-free coating compositions for metal substrates including an under-coat composition containing a polyester (co)polymer, and an under-coat cross-linker; and an over-coat composition containing a poly(vinyl chloride) (co)polymer dispersed in a substantially nonaqueous carrier liquid, an over-coat cross-linker, and a functional (meth)acrylic (co)polymer. Also provided is a method of coating a metal substrate using the BPA, BPF, BADGE and BFDGE-free coating system to produce a hardened protective coating useful in fabricating metal storage containers. The coated substrate is particularly useful in fabricating multi-part foodstuffs storage containers with “easy-open” end closures.

Cross-Linked Polyester Protective Coatings

US Patent:
2010024, Sep 30, 2010
Filed:
Jun 15, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/815550
Inventors:
Peter Mayr - Laxenberg, AT
James Robinson - Pittsburgh PA, US
Fritz Altmann - Engi, CH
Assignee:
VALSPAR SOURCING, INC. - Minneapolis MN
International Classification:
B32B 1/02
US Classification:
428 358
Abstract:
The invention relates to protective coating systems derived from a functional polyester resin, a cross-linker and a phenol-formaldehyde resin. Also provided is a method of coating a metal substrate using the protective coating systems to produce a cross-linked protective coating. Further provided is a composite material prepared with the coating system and, in certain embodiments, useful in fabricating metal foodstuffs storage containers. The composite material may be particularly useful in fabricating foodstuffs storage containers and “easy-open” end closures wherein the cross-linked protective coating contacts the foodstuffs.
