System Apparatus And Method For Closing Severed Bone Or Tissue Of A Patient

US Patent:
6436123, Aug 20, 2002
Filed:
Mar 6, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/519241
Inventors:
James A. Magovern - Pittsburgh PA
Assignee:
CardiacAssist, Inc. - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
A61B 1703
US Classification:
606216, 606 72, 606 74, 606103
Abstract:
A system and method for closing a first side of a severed bone with a second side of a severed bone of a patient. The system includes a first anchor mechanism which is adapted to enter into the first side of the bone and a second anchor mechanism which is adapted to anchor into the second side of the bone. The second anchor mechanism is separate and remote from the first anchor mechanism. The system also includes a lash that extends through the first and second anchor mechanisms and which binds the first side of the severed bone with the second side of the severed bone. Preferably, the lash comprises a wire made of stainless steel or suture material. A method for closing a first side of a severed bone with a second side of a severed bone. The method includes the steps of anchoring a first anchor mechanism into the first side of the severed bone, anchoring a second anchor mechanism into a second side of the severed bone, extending a lash through a first opening of a housing of the first anchor mechanism in the first side, extending the lash through a second opening of a housing of the second anchor mechanism, pulling the lash until the first side and second side are contacting each other, and fixing the lash so the first side and second side maintain contact with each other.

Muscle Energy Converter Pump And Method Of Pumping Fluid Of A Patient

US Patent:
5718248, Feb 17, 1998
Filed:
Jul 27, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/507853
Inventors:
Dennis R. Trumble - Pittsburgh PA
James A. Magovern - Pittsburgh PA
Assignee:
Allegheny-Singer Research Institute - Pittsburgh PA
International Classification:
A61M 112
US Classification:
128899
Abstract:
A muscle energy converter pump. The muscle energy converter is comprised of a piston having an attachment head for connection to a muscle. The muscle energy converter also comprises a cylinder having a chamber in which the piston is disposed. The cylinder has a port for transport of fluid in and out of the chamber as the muscle moves the piston. A method for pumping fluid in a patient. The method comprises the steps of attaching an attachment head of a piston to tissue, such as a muscle, of the patient. Next, there is the step of placing a housing, such as a cylinder, to the patient's body. The piston is disposed in and extending from the housing. Then, there is the step of introducing fluid into a fluid cavity of the cylinder. Next, there is the step of moving the piston with the muscle of the patient connected to the piston attachment head so the fluid in the fluid cavity is pumped out of the fluid cavity by a base of the piston pushing fluid out of the fluid cavity.
