Energy Information Device And Graphical Display For A Circuit Breaker

US Patent:
6292717, Sep 18, 2001
Filed:
Mar 19, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/044716
Inventors:
James O. Alexander - Atlanta GA
William A. King - Loganville GA
David A. Leone - Lilburn GA
Assignee:
Siemens Energy & Automation, Inc. - Alpharetta GA
International Classification:
G05D 1100, G01R 1900
US Classification:
700293
Abstract:
An energy information system for use with a circuit breaker coupled between a power source and a load, the energy information system comprising: sensing apparatus for sensing at least one of i) a voltage, and ii) a current flowing between the power source and the load through the circuit breaker; detecting apparatus for detecting transitions of a sensed voltage; counting apparatus for counting a number of times the circuit breaker trips and interrupts the current flow between the power source and the load; measuring apparatus for i) measuring the current flow through the circuit breaker when the circuit breaker trips and interrupts the current flow between the power source and the load and ii) determining a plurality of energy related parameters including a measure of at least one of the voltage, the current and the frequency based on an output from the detecting apparatus, between the power source and the load; input apparatus for accepting a user input, the user input controlling at least one of the circuit breaker and a display apparatus; the display apparatus for displaying at least one of the plurality of conditions of the circuit breaker responsive to the input apparatus; and communication apparatus coupled to the input apparatus for selectively communicating at least one of the plurality of energy related parameters to a remote terminal.

Circuit Breaker Trip Unit And Method For Real-Time Fault Indication

US Patent:
6018451, Jan 25, 2000
Filed:
Sep 28, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/161837
Inventors:
Andrew J. Lyke - Atlanta GA
John L. Culligan - Alpharetta GA
Scott C. Turner - Lilburn GA
James O. Alexander - Atlanta GA
Assignee:
Siemens Energy & Automation, Inc. - Alpharetta GA
International Classification:
H02H 300
US Classification:
361 932
Abstract:
A logging device for a trip unit records temporal information related to a circuit breaker trip event, with the circuit breaker (11) including a trip unit (12). The device (10) includes at least a clock circuit (13), a microcontroller (14), and a storage medium (15). The device (10) can be configured as either a plug-in module for the trip unit (12), or as an accessory is mounted on the panel proximate to and in communication with the trip unit (12). The clock circuit (13) generates signals representing temporal information, such as real-time date and time information. The microcontroller (14) is adapted to be coupled to the trip unit (12) to receive signals from the trip unit (12). These signals from the trip unit (12) indicate a circuit breaker trip event. The microcontroller (14) receives the time and date information from the clock circuit (13) and associates a given trip event with the time and date information related to that given trip event.

Plug-In Ground Fault Monitor For A Circuit Breaker

US Patent:
5490086, Feb 6, 1996
Filed:
Feb 5, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/014306
Inventors:
David A. Leone - Lawrenceville GA
James O. Alexander - Atlanta GA
Assignee:
Siemens Energy & Automation, Inc. - Alpharetta GA
International Classification:
H02J 1300
US Classification:
364492
Abstract:
The present invention provides a plug-in ground fault monitor module for a circuit breaker trip unit configured to operate with a plurality of different plug-in plug-in modules. The ground fault monitor module includes a memory which stores data representative of the its particular function. This memory is readable by the trip unit and enables the trip unit to automatically adapt to communicate monitored ground fault data to the ground fault module. The ground fault module also includes means for setting threshold levels for a ground fault alarm signal. The ground fault alarm signal is generated independently of ground fault alarms in the trip unit based on its internal thresholds. This signal can be used to control an external relay which operates a shunt trip mechanism or an external alarm. The trip unit includes a processor and programming which permits a bi-directional flow of data between the units, such as display data and control data.
