System And Method For Interpreter Selection And Connection To Communication Devices

US Patent:
2009008, Apr 2, 2009
Filed:
Jan 3, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/006492
Inventors:
Samuel Joseph Wald - Brookline MA, US
Israel Mayer Stein - Chestnut Hill MA, US
International Classification:
G06F 17/28
US Classification:
704 2
Abstract:
A system having a computer system with one or more interfaces enabling communication with one or more communication devices, and memory storing a first database associating geographic regions with the most commonly spoken language(s) of those regions, and a second database associating interpreters with different languages, and a third database providing demographics of members who previously enrolled with the service and including information such as telephone numbers and languages spoken. In response to a requesting communication device, the computer system determines the language(s) spoken by the member associated with that requesting device as identified in the third database, determines a geographic region associated with the requesting communication device and a language of that region as identified by the first database, and selects a matching interpreter from the second database who can assist in both the regional language and one of the languages spoken by the member. The requesting communication device is connected to the communication device of the selected interpreter for either voice communication or text messaging with the user of the device. The requesting communication device may be associated with either a single user or with one of multiple participants associated with a request to the computer system to connect such participants in a multi-party call. In another embodiment, the second database is used to identify interpreters to assist in multi-party conferences or conference calls through remote audio links, in which a series of switches and volume adjustments are used to prevent distraction during simultaneous interpretation for selected participants.

Analyte Recognition System

US Patent:
2006009, May 11, 2006
Filed:
Nov 10, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/985315
Inventors:
Israel Stein - Chestnut Hill MA, US
Gerardus Giesen - Zutphen, NL
Jagan Rao - Moorestown NJ, US
Richard Driver - Cambridge MA, US
International Classification:
G01N 27/26
US Classification:
204409000, 204400000
Abstract:
An analyte recognition system uses an array () of ion-selective electrode (ISE) sensors, each sensitive to a different ion in a downstream flow path () therethrough to a coupling () which provides a ground or bias electrode. Another flow path () is upstream through an ISE sensor () which provides a reference electrode and the coupling. The coupling has a flow path, provided by a sidearm, to an outlet () going to a drain () for both the upstream and downstream flow paths. The upstream flow path reference electrode is a conduit for a reference fluid, and measurements from the other electrodes are made with respect to the reference electrode. Contamination and permanent poisoning of certain of the electrodes in the downstream path may occur if reversal of the flow were to take place, or if the reference fluid flowing in the upstream path were to flow into the downstream path. Reversal of flow is prevented by inclusion of a one-way valve, desirably a duckbill valve () in the coupling in the downstream path to the sidearm. Poisoning of the ISE sensors is prevented because the duckbill valve reduces the likelihood of a reversal of the normal downstream flow and reduces flow of the reference fluid in the upstream direction through the array of ion-selective electrodes.

System For Display And Analysis Of Physiological Signals Such As Electrocardiographic (Ecg) Signals

US Patent:
4098267, Jul 4, 1978
Filed:
Jul 5, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/813403
Inventors:
Israel M. Stein - Boston MA
Ronald T. Peterson - Newton Upper Falls MA
Assignee:
Clinical Data, Inc. - Boston MA
International Classification:
A61B 504
US Classification:
128 206G
Abstract:
A system is described for displaying several lines of electrocardiographic (ECG) signals on a cathode ray tube screen for observation, analysis and selection of those portions of the signals which indicate abnormalities of heart rhythm and cardiac events of interest to the diagnostician or trained observer. The ECG signals may be recorded at real time but are inputted to the system at much greater than real time. The system provides the display of the signal portions which were recorded consecutively, each on a separate vertically displayed line. In the system the greater than real time ECG signals are converted into consecutive bytes of data and transferred through a memory, which may be part of a computer, to a bulk storage unit such as a magnetic disc unit. The data from the disc is transferred to the display by way of the memory such that the display is continuously refreshed while the lines of ECG signals are under observation. Together with the ECG signals, other alphanumeric data, such as the time of day when the signals were recorded, patient name, heart rate, cardiac condition, and other pertinent information, may also be displayed simultaneously with the lines of ECG signals by the use of the memory and storage means to receive and hold such data.

System And Method For Establishing A Conference In Two Or More Different Languages

US Patent:
8041018, Oct 18, 2011
Filed:
Dec 3, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/451538
Inventors:
Samuel Joseph Wald - Brookline MA, US
Israel Mayer Stein - Chestnut Hill MA, US
International Classification:
H04M 3/56, G06F 17/28
US Classification:
37920201, 370260, 704 2, 704 8
Abstract:
System and method for conferencing communication devices associated with participants conversant in different languages has a system for connecting communication devices with one or more other communication devices where each communication device is associated with one of a plurality of different languages, and one of the different languages is designated as the main language. The system in response to receiving a request for a conference call, connects two or more of the communication devices in a conference call when two or more of said communication devices are associated with the main language, connects each of the communication devices associated with a different language than the main language with the communication device of an interpreter selected for interpreting between the different language and the main language, and then connects the communication device of the interpreter for each of the different languages than the main language to the conference call.

Adapter For Attaching Information To Test Tubes

US Patent:
2006013, Jun 22, 2006
Filed:
Dec 16, 2004
Appl. No.:
11/013859
Inventors:
Israel Stein - Chestnut Hill MA, US
Gerardus Giesen - Zutphen, NL
Renzo Montanari - Ravenna, IT
International Classification:
B01L 9/00
US Classification:
422099000, 422104000, 422102000
Abstract:
An adapter for test tubes is provided enabling attachment of information with identifying patient and/or test data, and which further facilitates insertion of test tubes into automated test equipment. The adapter has a cylindrical housing with two open ends into which a test tube and its attached stopper are received. In one embodiment, one end of the adapter is attached to the stopper and extends partially along the length of the test tube. In another embodiment, the adapter receives the entire test tube in a first position, and in a second position, the test tube and attached stopper are slid within the adapter housing, such that the test tube exits the housing and retains the stopper in the housing. When the assembly of the adapter and test tube is inserted into automatic test equipment, the adapter prevents the information attached to its housing associated with the sample from interfering with analysis of the sample contained in the test tube.
