Gastrointestinal Diagnostic Capsule And Method Of Use

US Patent:
4735214, Apr 5, 1988
Filed:
Sep 5, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/903769
Inventors:
Irwin R. Berman - Brunswick GA
International Classification:
A61B 1000
US Classification:
128759
Abstract:
A gastrointestinal diagnostic capsule that includes an encapsulated expandable foam material introduced through the oral cavity and through the esophagus into the stomach with the capsule being dissolved by the temperature and moisture conditions encountered so that the foam block or cube can expand in the stomach and be withdrawn through the gastroesophageal junction and up through the entire esophagus to obtain specimen material for diagnostic procedures for early detection of gastroesophageal cancer. The capsule and encapsulated expandable body or block of foam material which has been reduced in volume before encapsulation includes a flexible cord connected thereto and is preferably introduced on the end of a nasogastric tube, endoscope or stylus device to enable accurate positioning of the capsule after which the introducer or nasogastric tube may be withdrawn so that when the abrasive foam body or block has expanded in the stomach, it may be withdrawn through the gastroesophageal junction and up through the entire esophagus with the abrasive foam blocking obtaining cellular specimens for subsequent processing and cytology to enable ready detection of gastroesophageal cancer. Similar insertion and withdrawal techniques with the diagnostic capsule introduced through the anus by using a colonoscope allows early detection by cytology of colon cancer in patients with chronic ulcerative colitis.

Encapsulated Expandible Continence Device

US Patent:
4979947, Dec 25, 1990
Filed:
Oct 10, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/786116
Inventors:
Irwin R. Berman - Brunswick GA
International Classification:
A61F 1315
US Classification:
604369
Abstract:
A continence device in the form of a cube or block of resilient foam material capable of being collapsed into a small volume condition and encapsulated in a capsule of gelatin or the like and which includes a string or cord passing through the material and connected with a traction bead engaged with a distal surface of the block or cube or foam material. The continence device provides for voluntary trapping or blockage of gastrointestinal effluent when voluntary and natural control is lacking such as when a person has had a colostomy, ileostomy, or in other situations involving fecal incontinence. A introducer is provided for inserting the capsule, the reduced volume soft foam material therein and the line or cord and traction bead into a body orifice such as a stomal orifice, anus of the like. The introducer is in the form of a tubular member, such as a straw which is passed over the cord or string and has one end engaged with the capsule and is provided with a flexible section to facilitate insertion of the device into the desired body orifice with the gelatin capsule then being dissolved in the presence of body warmth and moisture to enable the compressed soft foam material to expand to a predetermined size and shape for blockage and temporary retention of gastrointestinal content in the body orifice. Traction on the string or cord during withdrawal results in compression of the contained foam cube by means of the traction bead facilitating comfortable withdrawal of the continence device from the body orifice.

US Classification:
297/314000
Abstract:
A seating structure includes spaced housings and between which a seating portion of a platform is located. The platform is also formed with non-seating portions and at opposite sides of the seating portion , which are isolated and are within the housings and , respectively. The non-seating portions and engage resilient elements through above and below the non-seating portions. When a user sits on the seating portion , the resilient elements through provide a buoyant and floating experience for the user. The seating portion is movable relative to the housings and to allow for outward movement and for a rocking action.

International Classification:
A61M 31/00, A61F 13/20
US Classification:
604 60, 604 15, 604 57
Abstract:
A method of applying a medicinal substance onto an area within a patient's body cavity includes providing an applicator formed by six integral sections. A proximal section is formed with an entry passage. An axial intermediate passage of the applicator extends from the entry passage through a flange section and a passage section. A slot section has a slot delivery passage communicating with the axial intermediate passage, and at least one axially-elongated slot therethrough. A solid section extends from the slot section, and a dome section extends to an end of the applicator. The method further includes locating the slot delivery passage adjacent the area within the cavity, forming a substance mass externally of the cavity, moving the mass into the slot delivery passage, and moving at least a portion of the substance onto the area.
