Method And System For Estimating Usage Of Computer Resources

US Patent:
6230204, May 8, 2001
Filed:
Dec 19, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/994836
Inventors:
Hoyt A. Fleming - Boise ID
Assignee:
Micron Electronics, Inc. - Nampa ID
International Classification:
G06F 1516
US Classification:
709229
Abstract:
A system for estimating the total usage of computer system resources by all users with access to those resources, performed in such a way that desired demographic information is available and computer users are not deterred from using the resource by the usage estimation techniques. The system selects a computer system resource of interest, receives demographic information on various computer users with access to the resource, uses the demographic information to select some of the computer users to be a representative sample of all computer users with access to the resource, loads a copy of a monitoring program onto each of the computer systems used by the selected users, executes the loaded copies of the monitoring program so that usage of various computer system resources by the selected users is recorded, transfers the recorded information to a central analyzing facility, estimates the total usage of the computer system resource of interest by all the users based on the usage of the representative sample users, and rates the resource relative to other resources based on a resource characteristic that depends on the amount of usage. In one embodiment, the computer system resource of interest is a computer document or a computer website on the World Wide Web, and the document or website includes advertising information that is displayed when the resource is accessed and used. In this embodiment, the document or website is rated on the basis of its ability to attract computer users with demographic information of interest.

Apparatus For Skipping And/Or Playing Tracks On A Cd Or A Dvd

US Patent:
6157597, Dec 5, 2000
Filed:
Aug 20, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/378641
Inventors:
Hoyt A. Fleming - Boise ID
Assignee:
Micron Electronics, Inc. - Nampa ID
International Classification:
G11B 1722
US Classification:
369 32
Abstract:
One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for skipping a track on a disc in a disc player. Unlike current systems, this system does not rely on identifying tracks to be skipped based upon which slot a disc is located in. Instead, one embodiment of the present invention identifies discs based upon identification data read from discs in the disc player. Thus, one embodiment of the present invention provides an apparatus for playing discs that skips a track on a disc. The apparatus includes a disc player including a sequencing mechanism that generates a sequence of tracks from discs in the disc player. The disc player also includes an identification mechanism within the disc player that reads identification information from discs in the disc player and determines from the identification information if a specific disc is in the disc player. The disc player additionally includes a skipping mechanism within the disc player that skips a specific track if the specific track occurs in the sequence of tracks.

Method And System For Filtering Unauthorized Electronic Mail Messages

US Patent:
2005018, Aug 25, 2005
Filed:
Mar 14, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/080104
Inventors:
Hoyt Fleming - Boise ID, US
International Classification:
G06F015/16
US Classification:
709206000
Abstract:
A computer system and method for filtering unauthorized electronic mail messages that are sent by senders to a user. The system includes a list of the identifications of the senders who are authorized to send an electronic mail message to the user. When an electronic mail message is received, the system determines whether the sender of the electronic mail message is authorized by determining whether the identification of sender in the electronic mail message is in the list of the identifications of the senders who are authorized. When the sender of the electronic mail message is determined to be authorized, the system stores the electronic mail message in an Inbox folder. When the sender of the electronic mail message is determined to be not authorized, the system stores the electronic mail message in a Junk Mail folder. In this way, the electronic mail messages are automatically stored in the appropriate folder based on whether the sender is authorized so that the user can view the Inbox folder containing the electronic mail messages sent by authorized senders separately from the Junk Mail folder containing the electronic mail messages sent by unauthorized senders.

Filed:
Dec 12, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/990055
Inventors:
Hoyt A. Fleming - Boise ID
Assignee:
Micron Electronics, Inc. - Nampa ID
International Classification:
G11B 1722
US Classification:

Unlike current methods, this method does not rely on identifying tracks to be skipped based upon which slot a disc is located in. Instead, one embodiment of the present invention identifies discs based upon identification data read from discs in the disc player. Thus, this embodiment of the present invention provides a method for skipping a track on a disc in a disc player that operates by identifying discs contained in the disc player. The method receives track identification data from a track sequencer. The method also reads track identification data for tracks to be skipped from a memory storage device. The method then compares the track identification data for the tracks to be skipped with the track identification data from the track sequencer. If the track identification data for the tracks to be skipped correspond to the track identification data from the track sequencer, the method skips a track specified by the track identification data from the track sequencer.
