Multi-Position Banded Earmuff

US Patent:
6148446, Nov 21, 2000
Filed:
Apr 17, 2000
Appl. No.:
9/550759
Inventors:
Howard S. Leight - San Diego CA
Assignee:
Bacou USA Safety, Inc. - San Diego CA
International Classification:
A61F 1114
US Classification:
2209
Abstract:
A noise-blocking banded earmuff wherein the earmuffs (12, 14) are fixed against rotation about a horizontal axis (34) with respect to the band (24), and wherein the band can extend upwardly around the top of the head, downwardly (24A) around the neck, or rearwardly (24B) behind the head, using earmuffs of moderate size. Instead of each earmuff aperture being of a vertically elongated oval shape, each aperture has four 90. degree. concave corner segments (46-49) lying at the corners of an imaginary square (36), and four connecting segments (41-44) that each connects two concave segments. The middles (56) of the connecting segments lie closer to the aperture axis (34) than the middles (50) of the concave corner sections. The connecting segments can be largely straight to form an earmuff aperture of largely square shape with rounded corners. The connecting segments can be convex (181-184) to form an earmuff aperture of largely cloverleaf shape.

Enhanced Band Earplug

US Patent:
5824966, Oct 20, 1998
Filed:
Oct 22, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/955919
Inventors:
Howard S. Leight - San Diego CA
Assignee:
Bacou USA Safety, Inc. - DE
International Classification:
H04R 2502
US Classification:
181130
Abstract:
A noise blocking band earplug has a band (12) with outer portions (44, 46) that are bent to prevent the ear-engaging pods (20, 22) from touching the ground, whether placed right-side-up or upside-down on the ground. When the middle region (32) of the band rests on a horizontal surface (64), a band inner end part (70) extends at an upward incline (C) with its outer end forming a second bend (80) so the outer end part (72) extends at a downward incline (D), with the second bend preventing the pods from touching the ground when the earplug is laid upside-down. At the second bend (80), the largely vertical height (J) of the band is increased and its outer surface (102) is made convex to provide pods for more readily pressing the pods against the outside of the ear canals.

At the second bend (80), the largely vertical height (J) of the band is increased and its outer surface (102) is made convex to provide pads for more readily pressing the pods against the outside of the ear canals.

Dual Earplug

US Patent:
5811742, Sep 22, 1998
Filed:
Oct 2, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/944094
Inventors:
Howard S. Leight - San Diego CA
Assignee:
Howard S. Leight and Associates, Inc. - San Diego CA
International Classification:
A61B 702, A61F 1100
US Classification:
181135
Abstract:
An elongated earplug of slow recovery material has one end portion (14) for use in large ear canals to effectively block noise therein and an opposite end portion (16) for use in small diameter ear canals to block noise while maintaining a moderate comfort level for the wearer. The opposite end portions of the earplug are of different colors, to enable a person picking up the earplug to quickly determine which end to place in the ear as well as to identify the earplug as a dual type. The larger end is preferably of a lighter color such as yellow, then the darker end which is of a darker color such as medium to dark green or orange, to emphasize the largeness of the large end and the smallness of the small end. One dual earplug has a small end portion which is tapered along most of its length, at an included tapered angle (B) of about 15. degree. , with the end portion progressively increasing in diameter until merges with the large end, without a step in diameters thereat, which facilitates rolling of slow recovery material in the fingers prior to insertion.

Trackable Earplug

US Patent:
5727566, Mar 17, 1998
Filed:
Dec 20, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/770407
Inventors:
Howard S. Leight - San Diego CA
Assignee:
Howard S. Leight and Associates, Inc. - San Diego CA
International Classification:
A61F 1100
US Classification:
128857
Abstract:
An earplug is described, which includes an elastic earplug body (12) and a metal part (14) mounted to the body to form an earplug that can be detected by a metal detector. The metal part (14) is in the form of a band that is clamped around the body. Where the body includes a narrow stem (24) and at least one flange (34) extending from a position (56) on the body and at a radially outward and rearward incline therefrom, the band can be attached to a location (62) lying a small distance rearward of the position where the flange emerges from the stem, so the band is hidden and is prevented from directly engaging a person's ear canal.
