Polymer Expansion For Oil And Gas Recovery

Polymer Expansion For Oil And Gas Recovery

US Patent:
6383990, May 7, 2002
Filed:
Dec 3, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/454687
Inventors:
Jeffrey C. Dawson - Spring TX
Hoang Van Le - Houston TX
Subramanian Kesavan - The Woodlands TX
Assignee:
BJ Services Company - Houston TX
International Classification:
C09K 300
US Classification:
507209, 507211, 507240, 507271, 507922, 166308
Abstract:
Methods are provided for fracturing subterranean formations using fluids having substantially reduced polymer loadings that have performance equivalent to conventional fluids. Reduced polymer loadings provide significant advantages such as reduced treatment costs and less damage to the fracture sand pack and surrounding subterranean formations.

Method Of Controlling Production Of Excess Water In Oil And Gas Wells

Method Of Controlling Production Of Excess Water In Oil And Gas Wells

US Patent:
5465792, Nov 14, 1995
Filed:
Jul 20, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/277955
Inventors:
Jeffrey C. Dawson - Spring TX
Hoang Van Le - Houston TX
Assignee:
BJ Services Company - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 33138
US Classification:
166295
Abstract:
The production of excessive water in oil and gas wells and other subterranean formations is reduced by introducing a hydrocarbon fluid containing dispersed superabsorbing particles formed using invert emulsion polymerization techniques wherein the superabsorbing particles are formed from hydratable polymers which are cross-linked so that they are insoluble in water. By introducing these superabsorbing particles into fluid passages of the formation, the water producing zones can be selectively blocked off by allowing the superabsorbing particles to swell with the absorption of water within the aqueous fluid containing fluid passages, while the superabsorbing particles remain small and unswollen in the hydrocarbon conducting fluid passages. Thus, the ability of fluids to flow through the aqueous fluid containing fluid passages is selectively reduced resulting in the reduced production of aqueous fluids while maintaining production of hydrocarbons.

Method For Increasing The Stability Of Water-Based Fracturing Fluids

Method For Increasing The Stability Of Water-Based Fracturing Fluids

US Patent:
5226481, Jul 13, 1993
Filed:
Mar 4, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/846688
Inventors:
Hoang V. Le - Houston TX
William R. Wood - Spring TX
Assignee:
BJ Services Company - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 4326
US Classification:
166300
Abstract:
A method for increasing the stability of water-based fracturing fluids is shown in which a base fracturing fluid is formulated by mixing together a hard mix water containing multivalent cations, a water soluble polymer and a cross-linking agent for the water soluble polymer. A water softener is added to the base fracturing fluid which hinders the ability of the multivalent cations present in the hard mix water to compete with the water soluble polymer for borate based cross-linking agent, thereby stabilizing the resulting fracturing fluid.

Gelation Additive For Hydraulic Fracturing Fluids

Gelation Additive For Hydraulic Fracturing Fluids

US Patent:
5773638, Jun 30, 1998
Filed:
May 16, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/858018
Inventors:
Jeffrey C. Dawson - Spring TX
Hoang Van Le - Houston TX
Assignee:
BJ Services Company - Houston TX
International Classification:
C07F 700
US Classification:
556 51
Abstract:
A method of formulating an organo-zirconium compound is accomplished by combining in solution a dialdehyde such as glyoxal with zirconium carbonate. The reacting solution forms an organo-zirconium compound and carbon dioxide which is evolved as a gas from the solution. This eliminates the need to filter or wash the organo-zirconium compound in order to remove undesirable by-products. The organo-zirconium compound can be used as a crosslinking agent for crosslinking aqueous polymer gels used in fracturing fluids for fracturing subterranean formations of oil and gas wells.
