Low Power Dual Protocol Transceiver

US Patent:
6996154, Feb 7, 2006
Filed:
Aug 1, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/920354
Inventors:
Harry Price Haas - Atlanta GA, US
Assignee:
Itron, Inc. - Spokane WA
International Classification:
H04K 1/00, G08B 23/00
US Classification:
375132, 375140, 375131, 34087002
Abstract:
The present invention discloses a low power spread spectrum transceiver capable of preserving power while selectively initiating data transmissions under a preferred spread spectrum protocol. The transceiver, while in a power preserving deep sleep mode, uses DSSS circuitry to periodically monitor a predetermined wideband frequency for a spreading code of a DSSS signal from a remote receiving unit. Upon receipt of the appropriate spreading signal, a limited data transmission can be initiated. The DSSS signal contains information that can be decoded and utilized to switch out of DSSS receiving mode and into FHSS communication or transmission mode, or an FHSS session can be initiated automatically upon receipt of an appropriate wake up signal. While in FHSS mode, FHSS encoded data at the end point device's transceiver is communicated to the remote receiving unit. At the completion of the data transfer, the transceiver returns to low power sleep mode and recommences DSSS monitoring.

Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum System With High Sensitivity Tracking And Synchronization For Frequency Unstable Signals

US Patent:
7577181, Aug 18, 2009
Filed:
Aug 22, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/209348
Inventors:
Mark K. Cornwall - Spokane WA, US
Harry Price Haas - Atlanta GA, US
Assignee:
Itron, Inc. - Liberty Lake WA
International Classification:
H04B 1/713
US Classification:
375134, 34087002
Abstract:
A wireless spread spectrum communication system for transmitting data includes a plurality of end point transmitters and at least one receiver. The end point transmitters transmit data via a frequency hopped spread spectrum signal where the transmitting signal is sent without the benefit of frequency stabilization. The receiver is responsive to the frequency hopping spread spectrum signals and includes a correlator and a signal processor. The correlator samples at least a first portion of a preamble of the signal and correlates the portion of the preamble with a known preamble pattern to determine a probability of correlation. The signal processor applies a Fast Fourier Transform algorithm to the signal in response to the probability of correlation to track a narrowband frequency of the signal based on at least a second portion of the preamble and to decode data encoded within the signal subsequent to the preamble.

James O. Alexander - Decatur GA, US
Mario Bilac - Lawrenceville GA, US
Assignee:
Siemens Industry, Inc. - Alpharetta GA
International Classification:
G01R 11/63
US Classification:
324103R
Abstract:
The present invention relates generally to a load center. More particularly, the invention encompasses a self contained kilowatt-hour meter which is integral to a standard load center. The present invention is also directed to a novel printed circuit board and housing for the self contained kilowatt-hour meter. The self contained kilowatt-hour meter of this invention measures the energy usage of a facility, such as, residential unit, a house, an apartment, a condominium, and then it communicates the energy usage in a timely manner or as desired to a local requester, such as, the owner, occupant or any other entity, as well as, to another requester, such as, a remote requester, for example, an energy provider.
