Merit Award in the category of Planning, Analysis, Research, Communications The Mosholu Parkway Preliminary Design Report was prepared by Saratoga Associates under Harriet's leadership. Saratoga was the landscape architectural consultants for this roadway improvement project for the New York City Department of Design + Construction for which Weidlinger Associates was the Prime and Project Engineer. The jury commended this corridor-planning project for the collaborative effort put forth to refurbish the historic parkway, and which exhibited concise analysis, sensitivity to historic significance, connection to context and enhancements to parkland and urban forest. They documented and communicated a complex, iterative process of investigation, presentations, design and dialogue with multiple agencies in a complex jurisdictional environment.
Honor Award Daylighting the Saw Mill River (Van der Donck Park); Yonkers, NY
NY Chapter American Society of Landscape Architects
Honor Award in the category of Landscape Architectural Design This project daylights the long buried Saw Mill River by replacing large asphalt parking lots and two underutilized public spaces with a cohesive and expansive urban park that celebrates and engages the river as it flows through the heart of the city’s downtown. Under Harriet’s leadership as studio director, Saratoga Associates acted as the landscape architect and urban designer for this park project, providing design support from concept through construction documents. As a project sub-consultant, the landscape architects worked closely with project engineers to create a setting for the river to emerge from an underground flume and to pass through a three-block long urban park flanked by walkways, overlooks, a multi-purpose amphitheater space, gathering and sitting areas until it merges with tidal water before returning to the flume to pass under the railroad station and into the Hudson River. The planting design emphasizes native raparian and upland zones and a total of 13,775 square feet of aquatic habitat was created. Separate rock placement plans were also provided to capture the feel of a natural waterway.
