Continuous Process For Producing Slush Hydrogen

US Patent:
5154062, Oct 13, 1992
Filed:
Jul 19, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/733047
Inventors:
Lee S. Gaumer - Allentown PA
Robert B. Moore - Allentown PA
Glenn E. Kinard - Allentown PA
Assignee:
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. - Allentown PA
International Classification:
F17C 500
US Classification:
62 541
Abstract:
This invention relates to a continuous process for the preparation of slush hydrogen by the freeze-thaw technique. The process comprises substantially continuously injecting liquid hydrogen at or near its triple point temperature into a slush hydrogen generator; forming solid hydrogen by removing hydrogen vapor from the slush hydrogen generator; alternately adjusting the pressure in the slush hydrogen generator to a pressure below the triple point of hydrogen and then to a pressure slightly above the pressure at the triple point thereby effecting formation and dispersion of solids in said slush; concentrating the crystalline solid particles in the slush to a level of at least 30%, and preferably from 45 to 60%, by weight; and substantially continuously removing the slush hydrogen from said slush hydrogen generator at a rate such that a substantially constant level of slush is maintained in said slush hydrogen generator.

Natural Gas Liquefaction With Feed Water Removal

US Patent:
2013026, Oct 17, 2013
Filed:
Apr 11, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/444061
Inventors:
Adam Adrian Brostow - Emmaus PA, US
Glenn Eugene Kinard - Allentown PA, US
Assignee:
AIR PRODUCTS AND CHEMICALS, INC. - Allentown PA
International Classification:
F25J 1/02
US Classification:
62613
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for drying and liquefying a natural gas stream is described, in which: (a) the water containing natural gas feed stream is cooled; (b) the cooled natural gas feed stream is dried and further cooled; (c) the dried cooled natural gas stream is heated; (d) the dried rewarmed natural gas stream is cooled and liquefied and at least one compressed refrigerant feed stream is cooled by counter-current indirect heat exchange with an expanded cold refrigerant; and (e) the compressed cold refrigerant stream or streams are expanded, and thereby further cooled, to provide said expanded cold refrigerant; wherein the cooling of the natural gas feed stream in step (a) and heating of the dried cooled natural gas stream in step (c) is by indirect heat exchange between said two streams.

Production Of Refrigerated Liquid Methane

US Patent:
5983665, Nov 16, 1999
Filed:
Mar 3, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/034052
Inventors:
Lee Jarvis Howard - Pikeville PA
Howard Charles Rowles - Center Valley PA
Richard Alan Wright - Macungie PA
Christopher Francis Harris - Old Zionsville PA
Glenn Eugene Kinard - Allentown PA
Robert Newton Davis - Breinigsville PA
Assignee:
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. - Allentown PA
International Classification:
F25J 100
US Classification:
62623
Abstract:
A high purity methane product is recovered from a feed gas mixture containing methane and one or more hydrocarbons heavier than methane by cooling, condensing, and rectifying the feed in a dephlegmator. The high purity methane product, containing at least 98 mole % methane, can be liquefied and stored for use as a fuel for internal combustion engines. A hydrocarbon product containing components heavier than methane is also recovered. Methane recovery and C. sub. 2. sup. + hydrocarbon product purity can be improved by the use of a combined stripping heat exchanger and feed gas cooler. External refrigeration is utilized and can be supplemented in part by autorefrigeration provided by vaporizing dephlegmator liquid.

Gas Liquefaction Process Control System

US Patent:
5139548, Aug 18, 1992
Filed:
Jul 31, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/739077
Inventors:
Yu-Nan Liu - Emmaus PA
Glenn E. Kinard - Allentown PA
David A. Zagnoli - Macungie PA
Assignee:
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. - Allentown PA
International Classification:
F25J 302
US Classification:
62 24
Abstract:
A method for controlling the operation of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) process which utilizes gas turbine-driven refrigeration compressors is disclosed. A feedforward control system compensates for the effects of changes in ambient air temperature on the plant operating efficiency by periodically predicting a new temperature and resetting the set points of key feedback controllers in anticipation of this new temperature, thereby optimizing the operation of the plant and minimizing the specific fuel consumption at a given LNG production rate.
