As a psychiatrist I believe it is essential to view the patient as a human being first and to follow the Hippocratic oath's basic tenet: "First, do no harm." Second is to remain current in the body of medical and scientific knowledge that serves as the basis for diagnosing and treating the patient. I want my patients to feel at ease with me so that they may feel free to reveal to me who they are and and what their problems are. If I cannot help a person I will tell them so.
