Apparatus And Method For Assembly, Retention And Physical Protection Of Radio Frequency Identification Tags For Oil Drill Strings

US Patent:
2003015, Aug 21, 2003
Filed:
Jan 14, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/047436
Inventors:
George Savage - Grove OK, US
Bernd Strassner - College Station TX, US
Kai Chang - College Station TX, US
Assignee:
Paul C. Koomey - Houston TX
International Classification:
G08B013/14
US Classification:
340/572800, 340/853100
Abstract:
Various means of identifying individual joints of drill pipe or other drill tools have been suggested but have found only narrow utility. Such means include low frequency radio frequency identification systems that are inherently limited by short read ranges and require the reader antenna be placed directly over and very close to an embedded identification tag. With the development of mid-frequency and high frequency systems for radio frequency identification, read distances become much longer and a Gigahertz identification tag has recently been specifically developed for automatic drill string component identification. This invention provides a means for configuring, assembling and providing in-hole protection to a Gigahertz or other radio frequency identification tags.

System And Method For Communicating Information Associated With A Drilling Component

US Patent:
2002001, Feb 7, 2002
Filed:
Jul 16, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/906957
Inventors:
Bernd Strassner - College Station TX, US
Kai Chang - College Station TX, US
George Savage - Grove OK, US
Paul Koomey - Houston TX, US
International Classification:
G08B013/14
US Classification:
340/572100, 340/853100
Abstract:
According to one embodiment of the present invention, a method is provided that includes coupling an identification tag to a drilling component and providing information associated with the drilling component in the identification tag. The identification tag receives an incoming electromagnetic signal during an operation involving the drilling component. The identification tag responds to the incoming electromagnetic signal by communicating an outgoing electromagnetic signal that includes the information associated with the drilling component.

System For Drill String Tallying, Tracking And Service Factor Measurement

US Patent:
5202680, Apr 13, 1993
Filed:
Nov 18, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/795943
Inventors:
George M. Savage - Grove OK
International Classification:
G01V 100
US Classification:
3408531
Abstract:
A system for the automatic tallying of uniquely serialized drill string components from which well depth is determined, in hole component inventories are maintained, individual components are tracked through the well bore, component diameters are identified with respect to blowout preventer seal elevations and the determination and measurement of individual component down hole service factors with cumulative totalization in a computerized data base management system for these service factors for the purpose of better equalizing wear in order to obtain optimum life from drill strings.
