Abstract:
A gastric access device having an external bolster and a tubular body. The tubular body has an integral bolster portion at one end and an integral dilator portion at an opposite end. An incision extending from an external body surface to an internal body cavity is formed and the gastric access device is inserted through the incision such that the bolster portion is in contact with an inner body surface surrounding the internal body cavity, the tubular body lies within and projects outwardly from the incision, and the dilator portion is on the outside or exterior of the body. The external bolster is slid or pushed down over the dilator portion and the projecting portion of the tubular body and into contact with the external surface of the body. The projecting portion of the tubular body is clamped and subsequently severed to disconnect the dilator portion from the tubular body. Thereafter, air flow control devices may be inserted into the tubular body, and surgical tools inserted through the tubular body and into the internal body cavity.

Gastrostomy Device Package And Method Of Assembly

Gastrostomy Device Package And Method Of Assembly

US Patent:
6896665, May 24, 2005
Filed:
Dec 10, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/016532
Inventors:
George J. Picha - Independence OH, US
Davor G. Mandic - Cleveland Heights OH, US
Assignee:
Applied Medical Research - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
A61M029/00
US Classification:
604104, 604174
Abstract:
A gastrostomy device includes a tubular portion and an internal bolster having a radial wing secured to the tubular portion. The internal bolster is flexible and permits elastic deformation between a first orientation with the wing wrapped into a generally cylindrical configuration and a second orientation with the wing unfuried. A constraining member encases the internal bolster to retain the internal bolster in the first orientation and to cover at least a major portion of the wrapped wing. Removal of the casing permits the internal bolster to move from the first orientation to the second orientation. The internal bolster may be deployed by a ripcord, freeing the internal bolster into the patient' stomach and deploying the internal bolster to the second orientation. Alternatively, the internal bolster may be deployed by the constraining member being dissolved by the patient's bodily fluids located inside the patient's stomach.
