Apparatus And Methods For Preparing An Implantable Graft

Apparatus And Methods For Preparing An Implantable Graft

US Patent:
6049026, Apr 11, 2000
Filed:
May 21, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/082984
Inventors:
George Frederick Muschler - Cleveland Heights OH
Assignee:
The Cleveland Clinic Foundation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
A61F 228, A61K 3940, B01D 1508
US Classification:
623 16
Abstract:
A kit for preparing an implantable graft, particularly an implantable, composite bone graft is provided. The kit includes a porous, biocompatible, sterile substrate and a container configured to retain the substrate and to permit flow of a cell suspension, particularly a bone marrow aspirate suspension therethrough. A method which employs such kit for preparing a composite implantable bone graft is also provided. The method includes the steps of providing a bone marrow aspirate suspension and passing the bone marrow aspirate suspension through a porous, biocompatible, implantable substrate to provide a composite bone graft having an enriched population of connective tissue progenitor cells. The composite bone graft prepared by the present method contains an enriched population of connective tissue progenitor cells and a greater number of connective tissue progenitor cells per unit volume than that found in the original bone marrow aspirate. The present invention also relates to a composite bone marrow graft prepared according to the present method.

Bone Transport And Lengthening System

Bone Transport And Lengthening System

US Patent:
5626579, May 6, 1997
Filed:
Jun 28, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/495924
Inventors:
George F. Muschler - Cleveland Heights OH
Helmuth Kotschi - Strongsville OH
William A. Smith - Lyndhurst OH
Assignee:
The Cleveland Clinic Foundation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
A61B 1756
US Classification:
606 60
Abstract:
A surgically implantable cable apparatus has a means for securing (32) a first bone segment (12) and a second bone segment (13). A flexible cable (17) is attached at one end relative to one bone segment (25). A flexible non-compressible sheath (15) has a bore (16) for slidably receiving the cable (17). The non-compressible sheath (15) is secured to the securing means (32) at point (40) and transmits a counter-compression force to the bone segment (25). An implantable actuator (36) is connected to the second end (19) of the flexible cable (17) and to the second end of the sheath (15). The implantable actuator (36) is fully implantable subcutaneously. The implantable actuator (36) is responsive to a transcutaneous energy signal and pulls the flexible cable (17) through the sheath (15) in an axial direction. The cable movement is applied to the bone segment (25), either directly or transmitted through an internal fixation device and the bone segment (25) moves a predetermined distance. Art energy source (42) generates the transcutaneous energy signal which activates the implantable actuator (36) through an intact skin layer (44).

Apparatus And Method For Harvesting Bone Marrow

Apparatus And Method For Harvesting Bone Marrow

US Patent:
2007005, Mar 8, 2007
Filed:
Nov 9, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/595472
Inventors:
George Muschler - Cleveland Heights OH, US
International Classification:
A61F 2/00, A61B 10/00
US Classification:
606092000, 600562000, 600564000
Abstract:
A minimally invasive apparatus and method for harvesting bone marrow cells, blood, and bone fragments includes a rigid cannula having a proximal end and a distal end with an opening. The distal end includes a cutting tip that is movable axially and radially to cut and disrupt bone tissue while preserving necessary viability among harvested marrow cells. The cannula further includes an inner surface defining an internal passage that extends from the opening toward the proximal end. Suction is applied to the passage to draw disrupted bone marrow cells, blood, and bone fragments into the internal passage for collection. The apparatus may include a rotatable shaft disposed co-axially within the internal passage. The shaft has a distal end with a cutting bit for further cutting and disrupting of bone tissue, and a lumen for supplying bone cement to the cutting bit to promote bone growth and healing within the bone.

Method Of Preparing A Composite Bone Graft

Method Of Preparing A Composite Bone Graft

US Patent:
5824084, Oct 20, 1998
Filed:
Jul 3, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/675498
Inventors:
George Frederick Muschler - Cleveland Heights OH
Assignee:
The Cleveland Clinic Foundation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
A61F 228, A61F 202
US Classification:
623 16
Abstract:
The present invention provides a new and improved method for preparing a composite bone graft. The method includes providing a bone marrow aspirate suspension and passing the bone marrow aspirate suspension through a porous, biocompatible, implantable substrate to provide a composite bone graft having an enriched population of connective tissue progenitor cells. Because the method is preferably performed intraoperatively it reduces the number of occasions the graftee must undergo invasive procedures. The invention also relates to an improved composite bone graft prepared according to the present method. The improved composite graft includes an enriched population of connective tissue progenitor cells and a greater number of connective tissue progenitor cells per unit volume than that found in the original bone marrow aspirate. The present invention also relates to a kit including the apparatus used for preparing the composite bone graft.
