Automatic Variable Shear For Bridged And Unbridged Terminal Insertion

US Patent:
6807719, Oct 26, 2004
Filed:
Oct 11, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/269660
Inventors:
Marlin Edward Herr - Gardners PA
John Michael Wasilko - Harrisburg PA
Christopher John Karrasch - Boiling Springs PA
George Edward Hoover - Dover PA
Assignee:
Tyco Electronics Corporation - Middletown PA
International Classification:
B23P 1900
US Classification:
295646, 295642, 29565, 29 33 K, 29 33 M, 29759, 29827
Abstract:
An apparatus for inserting terminals carried on a carrier strip into cavities in a housing having a slide assembly with a cam track movable between a first and a second position, and a pivoting lever with a cam follower. The cam follower is positioned in and cooperates with the cam track. The lever is movable between an open and closed position and has first and second shearing blades. An eccentric pin extends through the lever and is attached to a rotary actuator. The eccentric pin is positioned to act as the pivot point for the lever. The rotary actuator is movable between an engaged and disengaged position. As the lever is moved to the closed position, the first shearing blades engage and shear a first portion of the carrier strip. As the rotary actuator moves to an engaged position, the second shearing blade engages and shears a second portion of the carrier strip.

Wire Straightening Device

US Patent:
5676010, Oct 14, 1997
Filed:
Sep 20, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/717028
Inventors:
David Alan College - Annville PA
George Edward Hoover - Dover PA
Assignee:
The Whitaker Corporation - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
B21D 304, B21D 305, B21D 102, B21D 302
US Classification:
72162
Abstract:
A wire straightening device (62) is disclosed for use on a wire processing machine (60). The device includes two wire deflection units (72, 74) arranged to deflect the wire in two perpendicular planes to remove stresses in the wire. Each wire deflection unit includes a first member (90) having a set of upper rollers (92, 94, 96) arranged thereon and a second member (110) having a set of lower rollers (112, 114, 116, 118) journaled thereon. The two sets of rollers are adjustable toward and away from each other for deflecting engagement with a wire (78) to be straightened. The wire traverses through the wire deflection unit along a wire path (80) from an inlet side (132) to an outlet side (134), The spacing of the rollers (92,94 and 112,114) adjacent the inlet side (132) is greater than the spacing of the rollers (94,96 and 116,118) adjacent the outlet side (134) so that the spacing is progressively less from the inlet side toward the outlet side. A manually actuated cam (200) is provided for moving the rollers to an open position for inserting the wire and then to a closed position where the wire is initially deflected.

Hydraulic Actuator Having Fail-Safe Feature With Energy Absorbing Sleeve

US Patent:
5036752, Aug 6, 1991
Filed:
Jul 31, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/560704
Inventors:
George E. Hoover - Dover PA
Douglas J. Leiby - Enola PA
Assignee:
AMP Incorporated - Harrisburg PA
International Classification:
F01B 300, F16J 1518, B30B 123
US Classification:
92113
Abstract:
Hydraulic actuator comprises a piston-cylinder which has a fail-safe feature in the form of a lost motion coupling between the cylinder head and portions of the cylinder. The coupling comprises a constraining rod which is secured to the cylinder at the opposite end thereof from the cylinder head. The constraining rod extends into a bore in the piston rod and has a shoulder which is opposed to a shoulder on the piston. The amplitude of the lost motion is such that the coupling does not interfere with normal operation of the actuator but is effective in the event of failure of the cylinder or cylinder head. The lost motion coupling would prevent movement of any parts broken away by the fracture any significant distance from the remaining parts of the cylinder. An energy absorbing means is provided in the lost motion coupling. A second lost motion coupling is provided between the end of the cylinder and the external surface of the cylinder head.

Electronic Applicator Counter

US Patent:
7466788, Dec 16, 2008
Filed:
Mar 28, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/091097
Inventors:
George Edward Hoover - Dover PA, US
Keith Lynn Nicholas - Harrisburg PA, US
Assignee:
Tyco Electronics Corporation - Middletown PA
International Classification:
G07C 3/00, G07C 3/02
US Classification:
377 15, 377 16
Abstract:
The present disclosure relates to applicator counters and assemblies for counting, recording and transmitting cycles of machines, tools and the like. An applicator counter assembly for operative association with an applicator or the like is provided. The applicator counter assembly includes an applicator counter for counting, recording and transmitting cycles of the applicator. The applicator counter includes a magnetically responsive switch capable of being actuated in response to a magnetic force, whereby the applicator counter registers a count for each actuation of the switch.
