Method And Device For Removing Concretions Within Human Ducts

Method And Device For Removing Concretions Within Human Ducts

US Patent:
5254121, Oct 19, 1993
Filed:
May 22, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/888337
Inventors:
Bernard Manevitz - Bronx NY
George Berci - Los Angeles CA
Assignee:
Meditron Devices, Inc. - Hackensack NJ
International Classification:
A61B 1722
US Classification:
606128
Abstract:
A method and device is described for removing concretions such as calculus stones within human ducts such as the ureter or kidney. The device includes a flexible probe insertable through the human duct so that a tip thereof is juxtaposed against the concretion. The probe includes a positive electrode extending coaxially within the conduit and embedded in a solid electrically insulative material. A negative electrode is coextensive with and outwardly encircles the positive electrode. The solid electrically insulative material stops short by a distance R from the end of the probe, thereby leaving a recess without solid insulation between negative and positive electrodes at the tip end of the probe. The recess achieves a more efficient fragmentation of target calculi at lower energy, with less human tissue damage and increase in useful probe life.

An endoscope is provided with an integral optical element which includes a lens system and an objective lens that is recessed approximately 15 mm from the distal end of the endoscope. An integral illuminating element includes a fiber optic bundle that terminates at the distal end of the endoscope and illuminates the region of the distal end. The lens system terminated in a viewing port that is laterally displaced from the proximal end of the endoscope and which connects to a high resolution video camera that can display a magnified image on a high resolution video monitor, thus obviating the need for an unimpaired visual path from the proximal to the distal end of the endoscope. A lumen can be provided adjacent the lens system which brings a ventilating and clearing gas over the objective lens to keep the lens clear. The magnified video image can also be supplied to printers and recorders.
