Multi-Link Transponder For Aircraft And Method Of Providing Multi-Link Transponder Capability To An Aircraft Having An Existing Transponder

US Patent:
2013014, Jun 6, 2013
Filed:
Nov 21, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/683592
Inventors:
Gary S. Watson - Ada MI, US
Lee R. Carlson - Grand Rapids MI, US
Assignee:
L-3 Communications Avionics Systems, Inc. - Grand Rapids MI
International Classification:
G01S 13/93
US Classification:
342 30
Abstract:
A transponder system that is adapted to be positioned in an aircraft includes a transponder that is adapted to transmit information pertaining to the aircraft in which the transponder is positioned includes at least one receiver that is adapted to receive information including information pertaining to another aircraft. The receiver(s) is adapted to receive different types of data on multiple different frequencies. A display, which may be integral with the system housing or remotely mounted, is adapted to display (i) information received by said receiver and/or (ii) information to guide user input selection of information transmitted by said transponder. The housing houses the transponder, the receiver and, in one embodiment, the display. The existing transponder in the aircraft can be removed thereby leaving an opening in the aircraft and the transponder installed in the opening.

Method Of Compensating For Installation Orientation Of An Attitude Determining Device Onboard A Craft

US Patent:
5841018, Nov 24, 1998
Filed:
Dec 13, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/785553
Inventors:
Gary Stewart Watson - Ada MI
Krishna Devarasetty - Kentwood MI
Assignee:
B. F. Goodrich Avionics Systems, Inc. - Akron OH
International Classification:
G01C 1738, G01C 2100
US Classification:
73 181
Abstract:
In accordance with the disclosed method, an attitude determining device which is installed onboard a mobile craft, like an aircraft, for example, at an unknown orientation with respect to the reference coordinate system of the craft senses its installation orientation with respect to an earth frame coordinate system when the craft is at rest to obtain a static orientation measurement thereof. Thereafter, an attitude of the mobile craft with respect to the earth frame is measured with the attitude determining device and such measurement is compensated with the static orientation measurement to obtain attitude information of the craft's reference coordinate system with respect to the earth frame coordinate system. The installation orientation of the attitude determining device may be sensed while the craft is at rest in either a leveled or unleveled condition.

Automatic Display Of Approach Minimums

US Patent:
2011008, Apr 14, 2011
Filed:
Oct 14, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/904352
Inventors:
Gary S. Watson - Ada MI, US
Blake R. Getson - Columbus OH, US
Kevin Carney - Westerville OH, US
David H. Sitter - Dublin OH, US
Dennis Polischuk - Rockford MI, US
Roger L. Powers - Reed City MI, US
Eric R. Francis - Westerville OH, US
Shawn M. Hyde - Grandview Heights OH, US
Brian S. Zingg - Glendale AZ, US
Assignee:
L-3 COMMUNICATIONS AVIONICS SYSTEMS, INC. - Grand Rapids MI
International Classification:
G06F 19/00, G06F 3/048
US Classification:
701 16, 715780
Abstract:
A system installed in an aircraft automatically retrieves and displays approach minimum data to the pilot, thereby relieving him or her of the burden of searching for the desired information. The display of the data may take the form of a complete or partial image of a published approach chart. In a variation, the system may both automatically retrieve and automatically enter the desired data into the flight plan, thereby relieving the pilot of both the searching and data-entry tasks. The system may include a database, a screen, a control, and a controller.

Aircraft Stall Warning System

US Patent:
5595357, Jan 21, 1997
Filed:
Jul 5, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/270702
Inventors:
Paul A. Catlin - Lowell MI
Douglas C. Ballard - Wayland MI
Gary S. Watson - Ada MI
Alfred M. Worden - Brecksville OH
Assignee:
The B. F. Goodrich Company - Akron OH
International Classification:
B64D 4300, G08B 2300
US Classification:
244 1R
Abstract:
An aircraft stall warning system includes an angle of attack sensor which provides a signal to an angle of attack processor which provides an angle of attack signal to a display. An air pressure sensor provides an air turbulence intensity ratio signal to an aerodynamic performance processor which provides an aerodynamic performance signal to the display. The display therefore simultaneously displays both theoretical stall margin and actual stall margin to thereby provide a pilot with wing contamination information.
