Saturated Cryogenic Fuel System

US Patent:
4406129, Sep 27, 1983
Filed:
Dec 11, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/329670
Inventors:
Gary L. Mills - Boulder CO
Assignee:
Beech Aircraft Corporation - Wichita KS
International Classification:
F25B 1900
US Classification:
62 7
Abstract:
A cryogenic fuel system for an internal combustion engine utilizing both the liquid and vapor of a saturated liquid fuel comprising an insulated storage tank having inner and outer walls a vapor tube passing through the walls of the tank with its open end positioned approximate the top of the tank above the liquid level and its opposite end connected to the engine; a liquid entry and exit tube passing through the walls of the tank with a portion of the tube at or above the open end of the vapor tube, the liquid tube extending downwardly to the bottom portion of the tank to its open end; a first pressure-actuated valve means positioned in the vapor tube having an open or closed position which opens the vapor tube to the engine when the tank pressure exceeds a predetermined pressure; and a second valve means in the liquid tube having an open and closed position which opens the liquid tube to the engine when the engine is running.

Integrated Multilayer Insulation

US Patent:
8234835, Aug 7, 2012
Filed:
Jun 29, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/493852
Inventors:
Scott A. Dye - Morrison CO, US
Gary L. Mills - Boulder CO, US
Assignee:
Quest Product Development Corporation - Wheat Ridge CO
International Classification:
E04C 2/54
US Classification:
527831, 527881, 2441717
Abstract:
A multilayer insulation with an array of posts is provided. In particular, the posts are comprised of multiple post or support elements that are interconnected to radiation shields or sheets comprising the layers of the integrated multi-layer insulation (IMLI) structure. The support elements maintain spacing between adjacent sheets, thus maintaining a volume between the sheets. The support elements can each feature a plurality of support arms. The support elements can each additionally include a support beam that defines a minimum spacing between sheets when the IMLI structure is under a compressive load. Neighboring support elements can be interconnected to one another by beams.

Integrated Multilayer Insulation

US Patent:
7954301, Jun 7, 2011
Filed:
Mar 3, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/041326
Inventors:
Gary Louis Mills - Boulder CO, US
Assignee:
Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. - Boulder CO
International Classification:
E04C 2/34
US Classification:
527881, 428 76, 2441717
Abstract:
A multilayer insulation with an array of rigid posts is provided. In particular, the posts are comprised of multiple post elements that are interconnected to radiation shields or sheets comprising the layers of the integrated multi-layer insulation structure. The post elements maintain spacing between adjacent sheets, thus maintaining a volume between the sheets. The post elements within a post can be attached to one another to form an integrated post structure. Moreover, neighboring posts can be interconnected to one another by beams. The post elements can also be configured so that, when the IMLI structure is not subjected to atmospheric pressure, the elements within a post are separated from one another to form gaps, thereby reducing heat transfer between layers.
