Bicycle Chainring Fastener System

Bicycle Chainring Fastener System

US Patent:
2003015, Aug 14, 2003
Filed:
Feb 14, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/077665
Inventors:
Garrett Smith - San Luis Obispo CA, US
International Classification:
F16H055/12, F16H055/30
US Classification:
474/160000
Abstract:
A fastener system for attaching bicycle chainrings to a bicycle crank comprised of a nut and a bolt. Both the nut and bolt consist of shafts with flanges on one end. The nut has threads formed on the interior of its shaft, while the bolt has threads formed on the exterior of its shaft. The nut and bolt can thus be threadedly engaged with each other to clamp the chainrings to the crank. Both the nut and bolt contain tool engagement interfaces formed on the interior of their respective shafts.

Bicycle Crank Assembly

Bicycle Crank Assembly

US Patent:
2005008, Apr 21, 2005
Filed:
Oct 20, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/689905
Inventors:
Garrett Smith - San Luis Obispo CA, US
George Dubois - San Luis Obispo CA, US
International Classification:
G05G001/14
US Classification:
074594100
Abstract:
A crank assembly comprises an axle with at least at one end thereof an engagement section, the engagement section comprising a central bore with a first inner threaded section. The engagement section is at least partially received in an opening in a crank arm. A bolt is inserted in the opening, comprising a first outer threaded section engaged with said first inner threaded section and a first tool-engaging hole. A stop element comprising a second outer threaded section and a second tool-engaging hole is inserted in said opening. The opening comprises a second inner threaded section engaged with the second outer threaded section. The second tool-engaging hole has a diameter larger than said first tool-engaging hole. The first tool-engaging hole is accessible from an axial direction through said second tool-engaging hole.

Bicycle Crank Axle Bearing Assembly

Bicycle Crank Axle Bearing Assembly

US Patent:
6983672, Jan 10, 2006
Filed:
Jan 18, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/052686
Inventors:
Garrett Andrew Smith - San Luis Obispo CA, US
Assignee:
Truvativ Int'l Co., Ltd.
International Classification:
F16C 43/00
US Classification:
745941, 384537
Abstract:
A bottom bracket assembly for a bicycle is comprised of a spindle and at least two cartridge bearings. The inner races of the cartridge bearings are axially fixed on the spindle by abutting stop elements. Crank arms attached to the ends of the spindle axially abut the outer stop elements, thus ensuring the precise and consistent axial location of the crank arms. Since the inner bearing races are fixed axially, the outer race of at least one cartridge bearing may be allowed to float in an axial direction to ensure proper alignment of the inner and outer races and the greatest possible bearing life for the bottom bracket.

Bicycle Crank Pedal Insert

Bicycle Crank Pedal Insert

US Patent:
2003006, Apr 3, 2003
Filed:
Sep 5, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/236162
Inventors:
Garrett Smith - San Luis Obispo CA, US
International Classification:
G05G001/14
US Classification:
074/594100
Abstract:
A bicycle crank assembly comprised of a crank arm and a pedal connected to the crank arm. The crank arm has a pedal-connecting portion through which a transverse hole is located. Contained within the transverse hole is an insert, which is made from a harder material than that of the crank arm. The insert has an inner threaded bore and a support surface located at the front end of the threaded bore. A pedal is attached to the insert such that a threaded portion of the pedal is screwed into the threaded bore of the insert and a flange portion of the pedal abuts against the insert support surface.

Hollow Crank Arm

Hollow Crank Arm

US Patent:
6314834, Nov 13, 2001
Filed:
Jan 25, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/236810
Inventors:
Garrett A. Smith - San Luis Obispo CA
Michael A. Kozuschek - San Luis Obispo CA
David A. Nelson - San Luis Obispo CA
Assignee:
Truvativ International Co., Ltd.
International Classification:
G05G 114
US Classification:
745941
Abstract:
A hollow bicycle crank arm 10 is fabricated from first and second components 11, 21 that are affixed at a joint 20 that is distal from the crank spindle mounting boss 12. The joint 20 is at least partially transverse to the long axis of the crank arm 10. Each component 11, 21 has a relatively-solid mounting boss 12, 22 for attaching a crank spindle or a pedal. One, or both components have a tubular portion 15 integral with the mounting boss 12, 22. Integration of mounting boss and tubular portions enables economic fabrication of a structurally-optimal design, and eliminates the need for a joint proximate to the mounting boss 12, 22.
