Method And Apparatus For Determining Available Transmit Power In A Wireless Communication System

US Patent:
6745044, Jun 1, 2004
Filed:
Sep 29, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/675706
Inventors:
Jack Holtzman - San Diego CA
Gang Bao - San Diego CA
Assignee:
Qualcomm Incorporated - San Diego CA
International Classification:
H04B 106
US Classification:
455522, 455 68, 455 69, 370318, 370468
Abstract:
Techniques to (more accurately) estimate the transmit power available for data service in a future time period (e. g. , the next frame). In accordance with one aspect, variation in the available transmit power over time is estimated. A first margin is then computed and used to account for the estimated variation in the available transmit power. The available transmit power at a future time instance (e. g. , the beginning of the next frame) is predicted and reduced by the first margin to derive a more accurate estimate of the available transmit power for the next frame. In accordance with another aspect, variation in the required transmit power for a particular data user is estimated and used in scheduling data transmission to this data user. A second margin can be computed and used to account for the estimated variation in the required transmit power for the data user. Whereas the first margin accounts for variation in the (overall) available transmit power, the second margin is specific to the particular link conditions experienced by the data user.

Appl. No.:
09/697375
Inventors:
Stein A. Lundby - Solana Beach CA, US
Leonid Razoumov - San Diego CA, US
Gang Bao - San Diego CA, US
Assignee:
Qualcomm, Incorporated - San Diego CA
International Classification:
H04J 1/02, H04L 12/28, H04Q 7/00, H04B 7/216
US Classification:
370493, 370394, 370329, 370335, 370342, 370441, 455103
Abstract:
In a wireless communication system a method for combination transmission of packet data and low delay data. In one embodiment a parallel signaling channel provides a message to receivers indicating a target recipient of packet data. The message also identifies the transmission channels used for packet data transmissions. Each receiver may then selectively decode only packets where the message identifies the receiver as a target recipient. The data packets stored in a buffer are ignored if the target recipient is another mobile unit. In one embodiment, the message is sent concurrently with the data packet on a parallel channel. In one embodiment, the message is punctured into the high rate packet data transmission.

Method And Apparatus For Controlling Reverse Link Data Rate Of A Mobile Station In A Communication System With Reverse Link Common Rate Control

US Patent:
7724701, May 25, 2010
Filed:
May 24, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/853638
Inventors:
Stein A. Lundby - Solana Beach CA, US
Gang Bao - San Diego CA, US
Avinash Jain - San Diego CA, US
Assignee:
QUALCOMM Incorporated - San Diego CA
International Classification:
H04W 4/00
US Classification:
370328
Abstract:
An efficient use of communication resources is provided by determining a behavior for selecting the payload size (data rate) of a reverse link transmission from a mobile station to a base station. The mobile station may store a predetermined table including the ratio of the power levels of the traffic channel and pilot channel (TPR), where each entry corresponds to one or more specific sizes of data payload, and consequently a data rate for transmission in a predetermined time frame. The payload size is selected based on an authorized-TPR. The authorized-TPR and a target-TPR are adjusted in accordance with a value of common TPR commands received from the base station. A fast-ramp-up behavior for adjustments of the authorized-TPR is followed when the authorized-TPR is less than the target-TPR. The down TPR commands are ignored in the adjustments of the authorized-TPR to allow following a fast-ramp-up behavior.

Kuo-Chun Lee - San Diego CA, US
Jack Shyh-Hurng Shauh - San Diego CA, US
Gang Bao - San Diego CA, US
Assignee:
QUALCOMM Incorporated - San Diego CA
International Classification:
H04W 72/00
US Classification:
370312
Abstract:
Techniques are provided for smooth transition between broadcast/multicast transmission and unicast transmission. A method for managing unicast and multicast services switching in a multi-band/multi-frequency wireless communications system (WCS) capable of both unicast and multicast signaling includes determining whether an aggregate demand for a content provided via dedicated unicast transmissions exceeds a threshold. The method includes switching transmission of the content from the dedicated unicast transmissions on one frequency to a multicast transmission on a second or more frequencies in response to determining that the aggregate demand exceeds the threshold.

Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service Capacity Enhancements

US Patent:
2013023, Sep 12, 2013
Filed:
Feb 13, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/766719
Inventors:
Gordon Kent WALKER - Poway CA, US
Gang BAO - San Diego CA, US
Jun WANG - San Diego CA, US
Xiaoxia ZHANG - San Diego CA, US
Assignee:
QUALCOMM Incorporated - San Diego CA
International Classification:
H04W 4/06
US Classification:
370312
Abstract:
A method, an apparatus, and a computer program product for wireless communication are provided in which a first cell receives a configuration identifying a plurality of transmission layers in a multi-layer spatial multiplexing scheme of a Multi-Media Broadcast over a Single Frequency Network (MBSFN). The configuration may identify resource block allocations to transmission layers, seed values for pattern generation, and timing information used to allocate resource blocks to transmission layers. The first cell transmits a first set of resource blocks during a first period of time using a first transmission layer to one or more user equipments (UE) located in the MBSFN. Another cell located in the MBSFN may concurrently transmit a second set of resource blocks to the UE in a second transmission.

Margin Control In A Data Communication System

US Patent:
7346018, Mar 18, 2008
Filed:
Jan 16, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/346292
Inventors:
Jack M. Holtzman - San Diego CA, US
Gang Bao - San Diego CA, US
David Puig Oses - San Diego CA, US
Assignee:
QUALCOMM, Incorporated - San Diego CA
International Classification:
H04Q 7/34
US Classification:

Abstract:
Techniques for improved margin control in a data communication system are disclosed. In one aspect, margin is adjusted in response to a first subpacket error rate. In another aspect, margin is further adjusted in response to an overall packet error rate. In yet another aspect, the first subpacket error rate is adjusted in response to an overall packet error rate. Various other aspects are also presented. These aspects have the benefit of responsive margin control when the overall packet error rate is relatively low, resulting in improved data throughput and increased system capacity.

Quality Of Service Control In A Multicast Transmission

US Patent:
2012026, Oct 25, 2012
Filed:
Apr 19, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/451480
Inventors:
Gordon Kent Walker - Poway CA, US
George Cherian - San Diego CA, US
Xiaoxia Zhang - San Diego CA, US
Gang Bao - San Diego CA, US
Xipeng Zhu - San Diego CA, US
Assignee:
QUALCOMM INCORPORATED - San Diego CA
International Classification:
H04W 4/06
US Classification:
370312
Abstract:
A network entity may dynamically control Quality-of-Service (QoS) for a multicast transmission in a wireless communications system, by initiating a multicast transmission having an initial QoS, and later during the multicast transmission, generating an updated QoS for the multicast transmission. The network entity may generate the updated QoS in response to a network load factor for a multicast area aggregated from base stations in the area. The network load factor may indicate a measure of aggregate available bandwidth in the multicast area. The network entity may provide the updated QoS to mobile entities receiving the multicast transmission, which may process a subsequent portion of multicast content according to the updated QoS.
