Abstract:
A variable cam timing phaser for an internal combustion engine including a piloted valve in the rotor assembly, movable from a first position to a second position, and detent lines communicating with the advance chamber or the retard chamber are restricted and or blocked when the rotor assembly is in or near an intermediate phase angle position. When the piloted valve is in the first position, fluid is blocked from flowing through the piloted valve. When the piloted valve is in a second position, fluid is allowed to flow between the detent line from the advance chamber and the detent line from the retard chamber through the piloted valve and a common line, such that the rotor assembly is moved to and held in the intermediate phase angle position relative to the housing assembly.

Abstract:
A phaser for adjusting the timing between a camshaft and a crankshaft. The phaser consists of an outer housing having internal and external teeth and an inner housing connected to the camshaft. The outer teeth couple to the cam drive—the timing chain, timing belt or timing gears. A worm mounted on the inner housing is meshed with the internal teeth of the outer housing. The worm gear is connected to one or two drive wheels, which are rotated by contact with stationary plates. The plates are moved by electromagnetic coils to contact the drive wheel or wheels, and turn them in one direction or the other. The actuators are activated by an engine control unit. The plates can be mounted concentrically on one side of the phaser, or on opposite sides.

An actuator for varying a compression ratio of an engine by varying by the rotary motion of a control shaft coupled to a variable compression ratio device. A hydraulic tensioner having a plunger slidably fitted in a cavity in a housing and biased in a protruding direction by a spring and fluid. A check valve permits fluid to only flow into, and thereby protrude the plunger, but not out of the cavity. A pressure relief valve is mounted on the housing and is in communication with the cavity. The relief valve includes a flat spring member applying a preload against a reed valve to seal an exhaust passageway connecting to the cavity.

Abstract:
A VCT phaser for an engine having a housing, rotor and a spool valve. The rotor having a bore comprising an open outer end, an inner surface, and inner end having a vent port and arranged along the bore, an advance port, a common port, a retard port, and a lock port. The spool valve comprises a spool with a first land, a first groove, a second land, a second groove, and a third land, with the area between the inner surface of the bore and the first groove defining a first chamber, the area between the bore and the second groove defining a second chamber, and the area between the bore and the inner end of the spool defining a third chamber. A passage between the first groove and the second groove for fluid passage provides fluid communication between the first chamber and the second chamber and lock pin.
