Male Impotence Prosthesis

US Patent:
4690135, Sep 1, 1987
Filed:
May 5, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/859459
Inventors:
Frank J. Gerow - Houston TX
Assignee:
Synergist Limited - Houston TX
International Classification:
A61F 541
US Classification:
128 79
Abstract:
In an external device for receiving and positioning the male penis in a simulation of an erection to overcome impotence, which includes a flexible hollow cylindrical body enclosed at one end and having the other end open for receiving inserting the penis with a tube provided for introducing a negative pressure in the interior of the body for drawing the penis into the body to its anatomic limit to achieve an erection, the improvement comprising a sealing member integrally extending from the open end of the cylindrical body and comprising a thin-walled flexible sleeve-like sealing portion having a predetermined substantially constant inner circumferential measurement which is a function of the circumference of the stretched non-erect penile shaft, the predetermined inner circumferential measurement being less than the inner circumferential measurement of the cylindrical body for functioning as a seal about the penile shaft to maintain the negative pressure introduced therein, but not engaging the penile shaft tightly enough to restrict venous blood flow therein, and a flexible transition portion integrally interconnecting one end of the sleeve-like sealing portion and the open end of the body for positioning the sleeve-like sealing portion in concentric axial alignment with the cylindrical body.

Apparatus For Protecting A Pre-Formed Projecting Appendage During Plastic Molding

US Patent:
4623116, Nov 18, 1986
Filed:
Sep 26, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/654782
Inventors:
Frank J. Gerow - Houston TX
Assignee:
Synergist Limited - Houston TX
International Classification:
B29C 3902, B29C 4503
US Classification:
249 55
Abstract:
Apparatus are disclosed for injection molding a generally cylindrical sleeve-like penile prosthesis from a thermoplastic or thermosetting material utilizing a male mold core and a pair of female mold halves in which the molded prosthesis has encased in a wall therein a portion of a pre-formed length of resilient tubing, the remaining length and free end of the tubing extending from the molded prosthesis as a length of free tubing projecting therefrom. The apparatus includes a mandrel for carrying the mold core and is adapted for mounting between the female mold halves, and means for anchoring one end of the preformed tubing at a selected position on the mold core. The apparatus further includes a first portion of the tubing after the anchored one end positioned adjacent at least a portion of the mold core, a box-like member on the mandrel and positionable adjacent the mold core surface for accepting and isolating the remaining length and free end of the tubing extending past a predetermined location for the tubing to exit the molded prosthesis.

Labeled Breast Prosthesis And Methods For Detecting And Predicting Rupture Of The Prosthesis

US Patent:
4795463, Jan 3, 1989
Filed:
Apr 23, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/041886
Inventors:
Frank J. Gerow - Houston TX
Assignee:
Baylor College of Medicine - Houston TX
International Classification:
A61F 212
US Classification:
623 8
Abstract:
Disclosed is a prosthesis for implantation into human soft tissue which is constructed of a suitable implantable envelope and contents to form a breast shape when implanted, such as silicone gel, saline, or a combination of silicone gel and saline contained within a silicone elastomer envelope, which has been labeled with radioopaque markers. The envelope is labeled with a marker that absorbs electromagnetic energy to an extent different from that of the envelope, its contents and the human soft tissue in the breast cavity into which the prosthesis is implanted which makes possible the use of roentgenographic imaging to determine whether the envelope has ruptured or whether the envelope is folded persistently in a particular location increasing the probability that the envelope may rupture along the fold line. Also disclosed is a method for using roentgenography to determine whether the contents, such as silicone gel, have escaped from the envelope of the prosthesis by labeling the envelope with radioopaque materials, as mentioned above, and a method for determining whether fold-fault failure of the envelope of the implanted prostheses is likely to occur.

4175554, Nov 27, 1979
Filed:
Mar 16, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/887224
Inventors:
Frank J. Gerow - Houston TX
International Classification:
A61F 500
US Classification:
128 79
Abstract:
A device for receiving and positioning in a simulation of an erection the genital organ of an impotent male, which device comprises a sleeve-like body enclosed at one end and having the other end open for receiving the extremity of the male organ. After the organ is inserted, means is provided for introducing a negative pressure on the interior of the body which has the effect of drawing the male organ into the interior of the sleeve in an erection-like position.

External Male Urinary Catheter And Collection System

US Patent:
4957487, Sep 18, 1990
Filed:
Dec 30, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/292559
Inventors:
Frank J. Gerow - Houston TX
Assignee:
Baylor College of Medicine - Houston TX
International Classification:
A61M 3700
US Classification:
604133
Abstract:
An external male urinary catheter and collection system utilizes a sheath-like member for accepting the male penis, a negative pressure evacuation device communicating with the sheath-like member, the negative pressure causing the penis to elongate in a simulated erection, and a thin-walled sealing portion of the sheath-like member to provide an air-tight seal about the elongated penis. A one-way drainage tube to permit draining of urine into the evacuation device and a one-way air tube to permit equalization of the negative pressure between the sheath-like member and the evacuation device after urine has been voided into the evacuation device are also provided. The evacuation device may be worn attached to the leg of the wearer.
