Brain Electrical Activity Mapping

Brain Electrical Activity Mapping

US Patent:
RE34015, Aug 4, 1992
Filed:
Aug 7, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/083848
Inventors:
Frank H. Duffy - Boston MA
Assignee:
The Children's Medical Center Corporation - Boston MA
International Classification:
A61B 50484
US Classification:
128731
Abstract:
Apparatus for generating a topographic display of information on brain electrical activity based on responses of electrical-activity transducers placed on the skull. In different aspects, the brain is stimulated at pseudorandom intervals to produce EP responses; matrices corresponding to the electrical responses are processed to generate a statistical comparison matrix and the corresponding display map is grid sector analyzed; a series of tests is administered some of which put the brain in a simple resting state, others putting the brain in nonresting states of varying activity level; statistical comparison matrixes are generated representing the statistical difference between normal and abnormal groups at different skull locations with respect to different brain activities; significance probability maps are generated each representing the statistical difference between a patient and the normal population with respect to different brain activities; and an epileptic spike is caused, a sufficient number of data matrices is generated to capture onset of the spike, and the frame rate of display of the corresponding topographic maps is selectably changed for observing the onset.

Spatial Trajectory Analysis In Brain Electrical Activity Mapping

Spatial Trajectory Analysis In Brain Electrical Activity Mapping

US Patent:
4841983, Jun 27, 1989
Filed:
Apr 13, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/038037
Inventors:
Frank H. Duffy - Brighton MA
International Classification:
A61B 504
US Classification:
128731
Abstract:
A method is disclosed for utilizing brain evoked potentials for characterizing brain pathology. A brain electrical activity map is prepared from a patient's evoked potential data, and the centers of gravity of peaks of the evoked potential are calculated for a sequence of frames of the map, and plotted in a single frame to provide a spatial trajectory which may then be compared to a patient norm in order to detect and characterize brain pathology.

Temporal Trajectory Analysis In Brain Electrical Activity Mapping

Temporal Trajectory Analysis In Brain Electrical Activity Mapping

US Patent:
4815474, Mar 28, 1989
Filed:
Apr 13, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/037981
Inventors:
Frank H. Duffy - Brighton MA
Assignee:
The Children's Medical Center Corporation - Boston MA
International Classification:
A61B 504
US Classification:
128731
Abstract:
Pathological changes in brain electrical activity over time caused by for example growth of a lesion are detected by producing a brain electrical activity map such as a statistical probability map, and then selecting a template or mask surrounding a suspect area, summating values of the map within the template area to form an aggregate statistical feature, and then plotting the feature over a period of time, e. g. several weeks, to form a trend plot characteristic of brain electrical activity changes.

Cross Correlation Analysis In Brain Electrical Activity Mapping

Cross Correlation Analysis In Brain Electrical Activity Mapping

US Patent:
4844086, Jul 4, 1989
Filed:
Apr 13, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/037982
Inventors:
Frank H. Duffy - Brighton MA
Assignee:
The Children's Medical Center Corporation - Boston MA
International Classification:
A61B 504
US Classification:
128731
Abstract:
A diagnostic method is disclosed wherein brain evoked potential (EP) data from a plurality of electrode sites on the patient's head is gathered and compared with a comparable EP for normal patients by forming (1) the cross-correlation between the patient's EP and the normal EP, (2) the maximum cross-correlation for any time shift in a selected period or C. sub. max, and (3) the time shift T. sub. max at which the maximum correlation occurs. Selected ones of these values for particular evoked potentials are used to compute diagnostic feature values, and a plurality of diagnostic feature values are used to achieve a diagnosis of brain pathology.
