System And Method For Producing Pulsed Monochromatic X-Rays

System And Method For Producing Pulsed Monochromatic X-Rays

US Patent:
6687333, Feb 3, 2004
Filed:
Sep 28, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/964872
Inventors:
Frank E. Carroll - Nashville TN
Robert H. Traeger - Nashville TN
Marcus H. Mendenhall - Nashville TN
James W. Waters - Nashville TN
Glenn Edwards - Chapel Hill NC
Charles A. Brau - Nashville TN
Assignee:
Vanderbilt University - Nashville TN
International Classification:
G21G 400
US Classification:
378119, 378138
Abstract:
A system for generating tunable pulsed monochromatic X-rays includes a tabletop laser emitting a light beam that is counter-propagated against an electron beam produced by a linear accelerator. X-ray photon pulses are generated by inverse Compton scattering that occurs as a consequence of the “collision” that occurs between the electron beam and IR photons generated by the laser. The system uses a novel pulse structure comprising, for example, a single micropulse. In this way, pulses of very short X-rays are generated that are controllable on an individual basis with respect to their frequency, energy level, “direction,” and duration.

System And Method For Producing Pulsed Monochromatic X-Rays

US Patent:
6332017, Dec 18, 2001
Filed:
Jan 21, 2000
Appl. No.:
9/488898
Inventors:
Frank E. Carroll - Nashville TN
Robert H. Traeger - Nashville TN
Marcus H. Mendenhall - Nashville TN
James W. Waters - Nashville TN
Glenn Edwards - Nashville TN
Charles A. Brau - Nashville TN
Assignee:
Vanderbilt University - Nashville TN
International Classification:
H01J 3514
US Classification:
378119
Abstract:
A system for generating tunable pulsed monochromatic X-rays comprises a tabletop terawatt laser delivering 10 Joules of energy in 10 ps at a wavelength of 1. 1 microns. The light beam from the laser is counter-propagated against an electron beam produced by a linear accelerator. X-ray photons are generated by inverse Compton scattering that occurs as a consequence of the "collision" that occurs between the electron beam and IR photons generated by the laser. The system uses a novel pulse structure comprising, in a preferred embodiment, a single micropulse. The LINAC is configured to generate an electron beam having 1 nanocoulomb of charge in a microbunch having a pulse length of about 5 picoseconds or less (or an electron beam brightness of 10. sup. 12 A/m. sup. 2 -radian. sup. 2 @ 500 A). A beam alignment sub-system is used at the laser beam--electron beam interaction zone and directs the X-ray beam, in a preferred embodiment, through a beryllium window and onto mosaic crystals which divert the beam into a beam transport system toward the imaging target.

Apparatus And Method For Three-Dimensional Imaging Using A Stationary Monochromatic X-Ray Beam

Apparatus And Method For Three-Dimensional Imaging Using A Stationary Monochromatic X-Ray Beam

US Patent:
6327335, Dec 4, 2001
Filed:
Apr 13, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/290436
Inventors:
Frank Carroll - Nashville TN
Assignee:
Vanderbilt University - Nashville TN
International Classification:
G01N 2320, G21K 100
US Classification:
378 85
Abstract:
A three-dimensional imaging device comprising a stationary monochromatic beam source projecting a beam onto a plurality of reflective mosaic crystals, wherein the plurality of mosaic crystals reflect the beam through a stationary object onto a stationary detector. A way for scanning the object includes moving the entire set of the mosaic crystals linearly along a line in the plane of the crystals, and rotating the entire plurality of crystals about an axis through the stationary beam source while maintaining the plurality of crystals in a fixed relative orientation. A potential application of the invention is to improve the accuracy of mammography in the diagnosis of breast cancer.

System And Method For Monochromatic X-Ray Beam Therapy

System And Method For Monochromatic X-Ray Beam Therapy

US Patent:
7486984, Feb 3, 2009
Filed:
May 19, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/848151
Inventors:
Frank E. Carroll - Nashville TN, US
Assignee:
MXISystems, Inc. - Fairview TN
International Classification:
A61B 6/00, H01J 35/14
US Classification:
600436, 378138, 378119, 378 65, 600407, 600427
Abstract:
In embodiments of the invention, a radiosensitizer or other agent is relatively uniformly accumulated in the cells of a tumor. An external monochromatic x-ray beam, which is tuned to a predetermined energy level associated with k-edge effects in the agent, is then directed to the tumor. The monochromatic x-ray beam activates the release of additional localized radiation from the agent. The additional radiation destroys the DNA of at least some tumor cells, making those tumor cells incapable of reproduction and repair. In embodiments of the invention, a single monochromatic x-ray beam source is used for both imaging and radiotherapy.
