Constant Output Current Load Driver

US Patent:
6115265, Sep 5, 2000
Filed:
Feb 22, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/200123
Inventors:
Francis Michael Barlage - Oro Valley AZ
Assignee:
AlliedSignal Inc. - Morristown NJ
International Classification:
H02M 3335
US Classification:
363 21
Abstract:
A transformer-coupled load driver (10) is adapted to provide a constant level of output current under condititons of variable input voltage and/or variable load resistance. The load driver (10) is provided with a current sensing resistor (30) which is included in an output branch (14) of the transformer (12). A pulse-width modulator (18) is used in conjunction with a voltage divider network (20) to sense current flow through the resisitor (30) and to control the current output of the branch (14) via modulation of a control signal delivered to the gate of a transistor (16).

Switched Mode Power Supply With Improved Load Regulation

US Patent:
4858094, Aug 15, 1989
Filed:
Oct 18, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/259218
Inventors:
Francis M. Barlage - Tucson AZ
Assignee:
Allied-Signal Inc. - Morris Township, Morris County NJ
International Classification:
H02M 3335
US Classification:
363 21
Abstract:
Improved load regulation is provided in a switched mode power supply having an integrator, with a controlled reference signal connected thereto, a comparator circuit and a square wave generator, connected to the terminals of an AND circuit, and AND circuit connected to a power driver outputting to a transformer having two secondary windings. A current sensing resistor connected to the power driver is fed back to the comparator where this current level is compared with the integrator output. A first secondary winding is connected through a diode to the load with a capacitor connected across the load and a second secondary winding is connected in a feedback line to the integrator with a series diode, a capacitor is connected across the second secondary winding with a voltage divider connected across the second secondary line in parallel with the capacitor. The above arrangement is for current mode topology and an alternate arrangement is shown for voltage mode topology. A separate embodiment is disclosed for use with a push-pull type of switching power supply.

Synchronous Rectification And Adjustment Of Regulator Output Voltage

US Patent:
5396412, Mar 7, 1995
Filed:
Aug 27, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/936686
Inventors:
Francis M. Barlage - Tucson AZ
Assignee:
AlliedSignal Inc. - Morris Township, Morris County NJ
International Classification:
H02M 7217
US Classification:
363 89
Abstract:
Output voltage of a switching regulator is rectified and adjusted by the internal body diode of an FET. When the output voltage exceeds a reference voltage, the FET is gated off, causing the internal body diode to reduce the output voltage by a diode drop. When the FET is turned on, the diode is shorted and, as a result, the output voltage is increased by a finite amount of additional energy. This adjustment range, a diode drop, is significant for low voltage, wide bandwidth power supplies.

Switching Power Supply With Foldback Current Limiting

US Patent:
5012401, Apr 30, 1991
Filed:
Mar 19, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/495828
Inventors:
Francis M. Barlage - Tucson AZ
Assignee:
Allied-Signal Inc. - Morris Township, Morris County NJ
International Classification:
H02M 7537
US Classification:
363 97
Abstract:
A switching power supply comprising a transformer (10) the secondary side of which communicates a feedback signal to a current limiter (35). The current limiter (35) consists essentially of resistor and diode elements (28, 32) and is operative in response to the feedback signal and a reference voltage signal received from a pulse-width modulator (26) to prevent or permit current flow through the diode (32).

Uninterruptible Power Supply

US Patent:
5168436, Dec 1, 1992
Filed:
Sep 26, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/588223
Inventors:
Francis M. Barlage - Tucson AZ
Assignee:
Allied-Signal Inc. - Morris Township, Morris County NJ
International Classification:
H02M 3335
US Classification:
363 21
Abstract:
An electronic switching power supply (10) is adapted to provide uninterrupted power during transient glitches in a voltage input received from a primary power source. The power supply (10) comprises a transformer (12) having two primary windings (WP1, WP2). Current flow through the first primary (WP1) is enabled during normal operation while current flow through the second primary (WP2) is disabled. When a transient glitch in the voltage input is sensed, current flow from a storage capacitor (126) through the second primary (WP2) is enabled.
